We have been asked by Essex Police to publicise a burglary in Southend during which some boats and other models were stolen. The details are given below. The officer requesting assistance has commented as follows:

I am afraid that I do not have  full details about the craft, whether they were made from commercial kits, fitted out from bare hulls or scratch-built. The loser is currently away on holiday in Europe. The officer says there are no photographs because they were all in a folder that was also stolen.
It is possible that the thief will attempt to sell the models on and it is hoped that somebody in the hobby may pick this up.

      *********************************************
Police have appealed for information about a burglary in Southend in which model boats and cars were stolen.
Model sports cars, three boats and a collection of Jaguar mementoes were taken when intruders broke into a garden shed at Retort Close between July 2 and 5.

      The boats were:
      A green and grey Second World War motor torpedo boat, about 40in long and fitted with a diesel engine and three rudders;
A black and red cargo trawler with red hatch covers. It is about 24-28″ long and has an electric motor
A 30in long black and yellow fast launch fitted with an electric motor. This boat has deck damage where it was attacked by a swan.

      The cars were:
A green radio-controlled model E-type Jaguar convertible, about 12in long
12 limited edition pewter model Jaguars made by Franklin Mint
Six diecast 1:24th scale model cars – a brown Porsche 911, black Porsche 911 speedster; green Jaguar E-Type; purple and white Jaguar TWR XJR 16, red Ferrari 355 and another Ferrari.
Three large boxes of DinkyToy cars. They include 20 Jaguar racing cars and 15 Porsches.

A silver paper knife and two glass items, all with Jaguar motifs on them, were also taken.

Anyone with information about the burglary or the whereabouts of the stolen items, should contact Pc Asa Smith at Southend police station on 0300 333 4444 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

      Hoping you can help

Perhaps we should all chip our boats, like you do for bicycles??   then the police can scan them when they recover stuff  and return them to their owners!  Ashley

              That is a great idea.

The system is called DataTag Electronic Anti-Theft System but the downside is the cost, perhaps Colin could ask his new chums in the Essex police for some advice as they are leading the way in chipping pushbikes.

the cost would never be as much as the time effort and money put into building the boat………..just look at your own Barrel Back, paul…………….£30, 40 or even 50 quid for a tag would save a great deal of heartache………………I’d even go so far as to fitting a tracker unit, now you have my thoughts going…….well worth it just to nail the bar stewards that think they can nick anything for the price of a fix???

Having a look at the costs of doing it to a push bike it looks like £10-£15 tops but that does mean we would need a central register which would cost ££ to set up. I suppose if some of the model manufacturers were to embed chips into the hulls during the grp layup then that way there is no way possible that the chip could be removed without destroying the hull making stealing it pointless.

I like the idea of putting these chips into boats and perhaps a centeral register could be set up on this website or even at a local club level then the clubs can register at a national level.
Perhaps the middle eastern countries have the right ideas about thieves and that is to cut a hand off and lose their head for murder.

Some time ago there was available felt tip pens which wrote on many surfaces and  only visible under ultra violet light. It was suggested  post code and house number was suitable. The police may know of them. I have one given away by the A A many years ago, still seems to work.

Havn`t I seen some sort of “smart water” you can use for identification purposes? (but dont get the boat wet in case it washes off!)

Trouble with all this is ….how do you know a boat for sale at an antique fair or car boot /flebay etc is not stolen? the seller is not likely to provide a certificate by the police guaranteeing its not stolen, and how many items/boats are sold with a signed certificate or reciept guaranteeing sale authenticity? and these could be faked anyway.

A pictorial register of stolen boats would only be any good if everyone carried it around to i.d stolen merchandise.  Its a bit difficult really. For such a minority sport as model boating (comparatively) any sort of database would prove to be too expensive to set up.

How about a regular column, however small , in the regular model mags advertising recently stolen items..or would this be too expensive as well in column inches???

It may help if poeple plastered their name all over the inside of the boats to i.d them once stolen? as to be honest, one Taymar looks just like another to me..

Ashley  (having no boats worth that much for anyone to bother to pinch)

Sounds like an idea that can be done online Ashley at no additional cost to the websites. We could try to persuade the main websites to have a section for stolen models , I will consider it for the trawlerphotos site as we hae a pretty good model fishing boat section

Ash re the marker pens i think ??? that they can only be removed with with white spirit and are water proof.Surely the chap would/should have kept the cars in a display case in the house and you can get cheapo alarms for the shed and when they go off they make hell of a din !!!!!!!
Could these boats be stolen to order ?? Some one some where will put it on thewater and then ,with luck, these scum can be caught.
