Has any one else experienced the frustration of trying to figure out the layout of the twin cylinder oscillating engine MM1349 control valve piping.I have been involved with engineering all my working life and have make a variety of models large and small but I cannot think of a worse example of a draughtsmans art than this.I pity the poor modeller who has not had the benefit of a practical background trying to work out what is supposed to be going where with this drawing

I am in total simpathy with your problem. I built the engine but gave up trying to work out the conrol valve drawings.

Plan 'B' for me is to adapt Mr Abott's valve from his "v" twin engine which can be found in earlier issue of the magazine.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thank you Eric. One starts to question ones own abilities when confronted with a so called basic design.I may consider doing what you suggested but my first reaction is to do something different altogether.Thankfully I have only fabricated the cylinders and I am sure I can still put those to good use.By the way,can you tell me the year and month of the article,my club may have it in the library

              G'day William

I'll have a look through my (un-sorted) pile of magazines and let you know which month you need.

                G'day William,

Mr Peter Arnott's article on his control valve is very well written & drawn & can be found in his article in Model Boats August 1988 "Starting in Steam" Item 3.

                Hope this will assist

                Eric

G'day William, if you are still interested in the control valve for Basil Harley's engine, I think I have worked it out.(I hate things to get the better of me)

Let me know if you are interested in making it!

                  Regards

                  Eric

Hi Eric.Sorry about the delay in replying,I had a real problem logging on and I have no idea why.Thank you for the offer but I have abandoned that project and gone in for a tried and trusted twin slide valve design and a G/Box reverse.I have just completed an "Ayuthia". Siamese navy cruiser twice plan size and I have fitted 2 electric motors.Goes really well.Hull is 40 inches long so it is easy to handle .Thank you for your follow up anyway.

                    Regards,Bill

Hi all, I bought a plan of the Twin Cylinder Oscillating Launch Engine by Basil Harley a bought 15 Years ago and are ready to start building but it looks like it is a bad choice. I have just finished a Stuart D10 , a steam boiler pump, aSweetPea loco 5" gauge, That's why it's taking me so long to start this small oscillating engine. Is there a better small engine I cam make? Would any one have a plan of a small piston valve engine I could make please. Is there a proper plan of the Paddleducks engine. Thanks DougMaz.

Hi Doug. The only engine I can think of is "Marcher" by J.P.Bertinat plan No M75.I have built both versions, slide and piston valve. My personal opinion is to avoid piston valve engines in small sizes as getting then to seal is always a problem.I know some will say that this must be because of poor fitting but I have been doing this for a long time and my work quality is not that bad considering I spent time in a tool room for a number of years.I too have gone down in project sizes having completed 2 steam loco's in the past.I like to see the prospect of a finished job not too far ahead.Good luck with your search.Regards,Bill

Thanks Bill. I'm looking at a few engines to push my boat but I think the Stuart D10 is to big. I'll let you know when I start building. Cheers Dougmaz.
