Hi all.  Can anyone tell me the difference between the Stuart D10 and the Twin Launch engines?  From the catalogue they both appear to be suitable for radio controlled model boats and they can both be fitted with the Stephenson’s reverse gear. Is that correct?

The difference is the bore and stroke.
          D10

          Height
          6 Inches.
          Flywheel Diameter 3 Inches Diameter.
          Bore 3/4 Inch Diameter.
          Stroke 3/4 Inch.
          Twin Launch Engine
          Height
          5 1/2 Inches.
          Discwheel Diameter
          1 3/4 Inch.
          Cylinder Bore
          1 Inch.
          Cylinder Stroke
          7/8 Inch.
I wish they would come out with a 1/2 size D10.
          Regards,
          Gerald.

i think that is an over simplification, gerald……..like saying a satsuma and a seville are both oranges,

the launch engine is a serious bit of kit, being a compound engine with different sized pistons, one cylinder feeding into the other lower pressure cylinder, and thus being more economic on steam…next step up is the tripple expansion.
the double ten is basically two single cylinder D10 engines but smaller in size put together on one crank with seperate cylinder chests.

the double ten is from all accounts reasonably easy to machine and construct, where as the launch [ compound ] engine is more difficult engine to construct., but is the  more powerful of the two.

            hope this helps

Now that is what I like about this forum;  You usually get a good response. Thanks to you both. It surely does help.  Seems that the D10 is a better engine for a novice machinist to start on, although the compound launch looks like a fascinating project.

              Happy sailing.

The twin come as ether a compound or a twin, I haven’t built any of them yet ( I do have a D10 set aging), but I would recomend the Stuart Oscillator or the Stuart Twin Oscillator as a start. PM Research also makes some good beginner kits.
                Regards,
                Gerald.
