      Hi All

      Newbie here…

Although I used to build models from kits years ago I have decided to attempt a scratch build.

I did 'Google' this a while back but I'm unable to find the method (in steps) of how to develop the shape of the frames from the plan profiles of the boat/ship.

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction to finding the solution to this.

Thanks for having me as a new member smiley

          Hi Bill

Welcome. To develop the frames you will need what's called a Body Plan. This is normally incorporated into a Lines Plan that has three views:

Profile – Which is the view looking from the side. This shows the waterlines and stations (frames) as straight lines.

Plan – Which shows the stations as straight lines and the waterlines as curves.

Body Plan – Which show the waterlines as straight lines and the stations as curves (your frames)

The three views interpolate and effectively determine points on the hull in 3D. If you change any one view it will affect the other. There is not enough information to build a boat just using outline and you would have to "design" the intermediate shapes.

Your best bet is to buy a plan that has ll that hard work done for you and has all the frame shapes drawn out in full (or at least half a frame on the centreline so you can mirror image the other half)

Building from plans would still be a scratch build. But maybe you are suggesting a scratch design. That is a whole lot harder although considerably simplified if you opt for a hard chine boat.

Great to have another build brewing up.

            Welcome to the Forum Bill.

To develop a model hull from scratch you need a set of ines plans. Thes will include waterlines, buttock lines and, most importantly, a body plan which incorporates the information from the first two.

A body plan will actually give you all the frame shapes at designated intervals along the hull and you simply need to allow for the thickness of the hull covering or plankiing. If you Google ship lines or body plan or even model boat lines and body plan you will see lots of examples.

If you have a full set of waterlines at regualr intervals up the side of a hull you can develop a body plan from these but if you only have a set of deck plans showing the weather decks there there is not enough information. You will need plans of every deck in the vessel to develop the body plan.

              Hi Tim

Thank you for your reply – I was still searching the internet for a post I had seen a while ago which described how to use each of the views ( I do have a plan – it is of the 'Royal Daffodil II – Mersey Ferry – I think it's the Royal Iris II to be honest but that's another story) to project the lines from each 'view' to a flat surface.

I have a bit of experience doing this as I was a tinsmith (sheet metal worker) a few years back and used to develop templates for 'lobster back' bends and the like – anyway – stuff to do with true length lines smiley

I have just discovered the link I was looking for on a 'rival' site smiley (modelshipworldf*rum) where there is a pdf that describes the methodology I was looking for

(Hope that's ok- I havent posted the actual link to the site in case thats not allowed – if it is I have saved the link)

Thanks again for replying – your post is appreciated & and I'll be sure to keep you informed of progress once I get more used to the protocols

              Cheers

              Bill
