I need some ideas for protecting the rudder on my next build. The model is a 1930s style river cabin cruiser, the rudder is mounted on pintle's hanging off the stern. I built something similar about 40 years ago, and broke the rudder many times. This time I'm making it from brass, hinged on to a brass plate let into the transom so the mount should be strong, but reversing into another model with that will be like a dagger, and accidents DO happen. The only idea I've had is to form some brass rod around it, but that won't look good, and is not very true to the type.

Has anyone any ideas that will help? Or maybe has seen a similar boat with an elegant solution.

      All suggestions are welcome.

      Chas

Charles. Would it be possible to have to "stuff" at the stern, like a fender or something, doing the same job? Ashley

            mtb 71 mar 17 002.jpgHi Charles

Vosper Thorneycroft MTB's with transom hung rudders had plates the same diameter as the rudder arc, which may have been anti cavitation plates aswell ? Must have saved a few red faces when they reversed into the jetty

I would suggest a loop of springy piano wire which locates into push fit sockets either side of the rudder just UNDER the waterline. The silvery grey wire will be barely noticeable and protect the rudder at walreline level which should cope with most situations. Just pull it out again when not sailing.

Thanks all, the ideas are really appreciated.

Ashley, if I understand you correctly, some kind of wooden plate standing off from the stern. That might be possible without spoiling the look of the boat. I'll get me pencils out and see what it would look like.

Ray, I think that the two boats are so different that Vospers solution wouldn't work elegantly

Colin, the sailing only solution is a possibility, I'll give it some thought.

If anyone has a light bulb moment, please let me know, I'm still several weeks from building that bit.

                Chas.

Just to add clarity to what I'm on about, I found this picture on the web of something similar. The boat I'm making is much beamier though.
