To answer this question definitively during a break from decorating:
I have built two HDML's.
The first in the 1990's had Monoperm brushed motors – no longer readily available.
The second built in 2007, which I still have, has two 6v Buhler motors (running on 7.2v) purchased at Intermodellbau in 2004 – three for 4 Euros total!!
Both motors are still going fine, but are not available now as far as I know.
All my current (and newer) boats use brushless motors as they are more efficient and more powerful, size for size.
There have been a number of threads on here and articles in MB about brushless motors, but the common mistake made is that modellers think size matters.
An Outrunner brushless motor the same diameter and size as a 540 will be far, far more powerful than the same size of brushed motor. In other words a motor (s) the size of a bottle top will probably be adequate.
MFA still do a range of 300 and 500 type brushed motors (and geared) I believe if required though..
I am not making a recommendation for the 36 inch HDML, but one certainly does NOT need 10000 rpm and 300 watts per motor if going down the brushless route.
The other point, is you get what you pay for. Turingy brushless motors are well built and relatively cheap.
Hawk brushless controllers are not cheap, but I can get the prop's on my pilot boat to turn at next no rpm with the Hawk controllers. Alistair Engel (submarines ) does one as well that is very good and waterproof, but a bit cheaoer.
Finally – pm's? I don't look and check very often (if at all) as I have quite enough of Model Boats, Monday to Friday in normal working hours.
The best way to contact me with a query is via the editorial email address in the magazine for a reply in the usual way during the working week, that is assuming I am not away.
