I have built a hdml from an article in model boats back in the 1980's.

I have been using two of the old mono perm motors, but one has now packed up can somebody tell me what motors I should get to replace them. Hope anyone can help. With regards. Richard

We do model boats on this forum; what we don't do is telepathy. If you want help then we need something more than you have offered by way of information.

Which HDML? Which issue of Model Boats? Who designed the model? How big is the model? Do you have any photographs of it? What voltage are you running the motors on? Answers to those questions would be a start.

The boat is a fast motor launch, about 3ft long and built from a free plan in model boats mag back in the 1980s.At the time of building I only had two Monoperm motors so these were fitted, they have both worked fine up to this weekend, when of them packed up.So my question is what MOTOR will be a good replacement, voltage is not a problem. The props I run are 3 bladed x 1 1/2". as per the ones fitted to the boat in the original article. Please can somebody help?

I thought I had, with the links provided?

This looks like a standard recommendation from one of the links – has anyone got any better ideas?

I wouldn't recommend replacing just one motor unless it's with an identical type – and there were several versions of the Monoperm (none of which are available now, it seems). There is a 12v Super Monperm on E-Bay at the moment but it's £25 which is a lot to pay for a small DC brushed motor. Things have moved on.

1 1/2" is 37mm which I think is a bit too big for a 380/385 motor. I would be tempted to fit two 380 (3 pole) motors with smaller props (no more than 30mm) and run them from a 7.2v battery. The 380 is much faster than the 385 or Monoperm but I think will suit a fast patrol boat better. Current consumption should be around 5A each.

                      hi there

Have you had any joy with the motors for your harbour defence motor launch – the reason I am asking is that I have been going through some vintage model boat magazines and I came across Radio Control Boat Modeller – October 1993. There is an article in there which is written by some guy called Paul Freshney – he built the award winning model from a plastic hull. I am trying to find out which type of motors he has in it. I suppose you could email the guy on this forum as he is now the leader of the pack for Model Boats Magazine and he may be able to assist your goodself.

To answer this question definitively during a break from decorating:

                        I have built two HDML's.

The first in the 1990's had Monoperm brushed motors – no longer readily available.

The second built in 2007, which I still have, has two 6v Buhler motors (running on 7.2v) purchased at Intermodellbau in 2004 – three for 4 Euros total!!

Both motors are still going fine, but are not available now as far as I know.

All my current (and newer) boats use brushless motors as they are more efficient and more powerful, size for size.

There have been a number of threads on here and articles in MB about brushless motors, but the common mistake made is that modellers think size matters.

An Outrunner brushless motor the same diameter and size as a 540 will be far, far more powerful than the same size of brushed motor. In other words a motor (s) the size of a bottle top will probably be adequate.

MFA still do a range of 300 and 500 type brushed motors (and geared) I believe if required though..

I am not making a recommendation for the 36 inch HDML, but one certainly does NOT need 10000 rpm and 300 watts per motor if going down the brushless route.

The other point, is you get what you pay for. Turingy brushless motors are well built and relatively cheap.

Hawk brushless controllers are not cheap, but I can get the prop's on my pilot boat to turn at next no rpm with the Hawk controllers. Alistair Engel (submarines ) does one as well that is very good and waterproof, but a bit cheaoer.

Finally – pm's? I don't look and check very often (if at all) as I have quite enough of Model Boats, Monday to Friday in normal working hours.

The best way to contact me with a query is via the editorial email address in the magazine for a reply in the usual way during the working week, that is assuming I am not away.

You must be exhausted from decorating Freshney Manor, the west wing alone would take a team of decorators a couple of weeks.

Its toooo hot for playing around with rollers and paint brushes so get the Pimms out and get some tradesmen in.

                            Hi all,thanks for your replys, I have just bought 2x 385 Mia/combo drill motors rated 6 – 15 volts.

I will let you know how I get on.
