Nice one, dude! No frills, no complications, no problems – but no hardboard??

Dave. Thanks for that. What can easily be achieved, why make it difficult

Hardboard. Sorry about that, will try harder next time.

            Ashley,

amazing my man, I can feel another visit to that pond of yours coming on – and now I know what a Stolly is too. I'll introduce you to my Bug soon, just finishing her/it off ready for Haydock.

Keep on building, though where you store them all the mind boggles, Kimmo.

Thanks chaps. Raking it in…. DONT THINK SO.. i have heard most of the expenses go on Colins "research" trips away wink

The Stalwart really did come about after seeing the wheels on a well known auction site. I would have loved to motorise them but at that size….and 99% of the time is spent in the water. I did give it serious consideration but it was not to be. i have not seen the article yet and dont know what pictures were used, presumably one with the vehicle half out the water artistically taken to give the appearance of it climbing out? If not i will post some, after article appearance.

Those who have not seen it, should really get a back copy of Mr Hinton`s Stolly. A magnificent animal in all departments and fully all singing and dancing, but not cheap, as mine was!!

                Ashley

NB anyone visiting the pond should radio in ahead so I will have the necessary items of interest to hand and not be embarrassed by only having "ordinary" ships…not of course that my ordinary ships are not interesting, but some are more interesting than others

Not by any stretch of the imagination could anyone ever describe your models as being ordinary.

                    Congratulations, Ashley

Nice model and article and another exciting novelty for your Berengar……Is he still interested in your projects or has he fallen by the wayside?…..He must be growing up now?

Not actually read the article yet, but it looks very Ashley

Errrrr………We haven`t actually seen your film star activities yet?………Have you forgotten?

                    All the best, Ashley

                    Bob

I have a link for the film (which I have not fired up yet), but until it has finished the rounds, it is not available for general download.

It may be X rated upon release (all those naked propellers and big funnels)

                        stolly006.jpgstolly007.jpgHi Ashley,

Very nice model and very unexpected in model boats.

They are pigs to drive on the road and not much better in water! All the wheel hubs should have a white line across them. When they are not in line or at least all pointing in the same direction it's telling you that the transmission is binding up (there are no diffs) and you need to bump the thing on a kerb to get rid of the twist.

When the MOD sold them off they disabled the swimming gear. They were well dangerous in the water. However my mate has a full blown swimmer and each year it takes invalid children on a sailing trip around a local reservoir.

I know all this because in a past life I used to convert vehicles to run on LPG and did quite a few stollys. They do 4mpg on petrol so you can see the attraction. The pics that follow are from an article in 2002 Military machines.

                        Best Regards,

                        Len.stolly008.jpg

Len. Great article. You should have made electric conversions!!

I should think most remaining Stalwarts swim, as this is their claim to fame feature..it is like having a model sub on the pond, first question ever asked is "does it gounder mate??". What point a Stalwart if it does not swim!

Luckily mine is a dream on the water, other than it wont keep a straight line without some fiddling with the controls, but it is not a boat and so I keep it near the shore to be seen and demonstrate its outstanding manouverbility.

                            Ashley,

Sounds like your design is absolutely spot on. The real ones "won't keep a straight keep a straight line without a lot of fiddling with the controls", (and a lot of fiddling at that)!

                            Excellent model.

I have swished some polyester resin around the inside of the front cabin (lower hull section) as I cannot see any obvious leaks (unexplained water under cabin floor last outing), but the rest of the hull has been checked and there are more than a few hairline cracks to deal with. I have to put this down to expansion between the various sections of ply. I will follow my normal plan with this, and use a scalpel to rake out the cracks, run superglue in them followed by knifing filler and a repaint. I am going to patch paint these bits with gloss first, as it doesnt look like the matt is up to much in the tougness department.

The good thing about this is it really doesnt matter if I touch up the paintwork..it is matt, and the real thing was not necessarily noted for its fine surface finish!!

Two headlights have fallen off (they were wooden dowel slices) so I am replacing them with newly made scrylic rod "pills" which should be a better permanent solution. Paint has fallen off various corners, to be expected and also no probs, one of the beauties of using numbered Humbrol pots..ease of matching. You may have noticed in the article the indelible pen marking in the hull are concerning the paint colour and number! All the boats have writing on the inside somewhere if I have used a specific Humbrol colour.

                                Hi Ashley,

You are dead right. The real Stolly's look like poo! My Stolly owning mates take great pride in getting them slutched up to the eyeballs in mud, so don't worry about the finish! Slap on some weathering powder! Just got back from the show at Haydock Park. Nearly every model was pristine Not a hint of rust in sight. I think us model boat builders might be missing a trick somewhere!

                                Len
