french fishing boat

I have just got the plans for this model 1/10th fishing boat, has anyone built this before, as this is only my second ship, and first from a plan any help will be great.

I am going to build the keel out of beech, but I am wondering if this timber is too hard, is there a better timber? I will give myself a good 18 months on this one!

Hello Steven

This could be your lucky day!…….I built the Louis Heloise, way back in 1999 and have lots of pictures in my gallery

It is a great builders model, very bulky, scale construction and can be filled with masses of fine detail

I fitted a built in motor, which is a nice feature to have and helps with the sailing on quiet days

One of the nice features of the build, is that it is built plank on frame……The right way up on it's stand

It's up to the builder, what wood he uses, but Beech will be hard work

I used Mahogany for the frame and Obechi for the planking, because I had it in stock, but Obechi is funny stuff, it's a bit like Balsa and hairy with it!

I think Pine would be ok, you just have to work round the knots

I like lots of help, and good pics, especially the transom end, as I can't fully understand how it is constructed, the plan is a little vague i places for the beginner.

looking at the frames, they seem to have more cut out of them than they should have, at the keel.

At present I am looking a the plan, deciding the best way to attack it, I've worked out the keel shape.

I'm going to joint the stem and rudder post to the keel mortice and tennon, I think that will be stronger construction, and just glue the deadwood and transom spider, I'm going to rout out the keel from a solid bit of timber, rather than make a box section,

I would like to use teak but can't find a good supplyer, I agree beech is well hard.

I have started to cut out the sections out of ply, and will make the keel when I find the right timber!

One important feature missing off the hull frames, is a temporary top bar with central notch

This is essential for alignment

You could do with purchasing the four magazines in which the build was described, then the method of constuction will come more apparent

This was a very important stage in the construction!

I added temporary cross strips to the top of each frame and aligned the frames accurately

Note how the hull is built, the right way up……..Nice?

Hi Bob.

Great stuff, do you know the magazines that the build was described in? I could do with seeing them.

Did you cut smaller slots in the frames, or did you cut them as plan?

I like the stand that you made I'll make one.

It is essential that you make a first class job of the keels, bowpost and transome

Make them very accurate and screw the pieces together……..Beech would be ideal for this section

This is a big project for a builder only having built one model previously!

I cut the frames slots as shown on the drawing…..Why do you ask?
