I'm getting lazy in my old age. I just inherited a Dumas U.S.S. Crockett with only the hull assembled and sanded. I don't feel like glassing the hull and wondered if anyone has tried using CA to laminate .020 styrene sheet to a balsa hull? My plan is to cut styrene pieces and apply them as per the real ship (or close to it).

        Thanks,

        Dave

          Dave,

Possibly not the best of combinations although it might work. In your situation. If the hull is just sanded and not yet sealed, my preference would be to use gummed paper strip to plate it. You could use something like Deluxe Materiales Ezecote water based resin to moisten it when you stick it on and then another coat of Ezecote on top to seal it. Everything will blend in nicely and you will have a tough, smooth finish (as long as the hull itself is smooth).

If you don't like the idea of gumstrip then thin card will do the job and also, being a natural material, will stick very well to the underlying hull.

Ezecote is nice to work with as it is water clean up and any excess can be wiped away with a damp cloth – you can't do that with CA!

I agree with Colin that this is not the best combination of materials to work with.

A problem when laminating with strips is that the joints are difficult to match and always end up showing through the final decorative coat.

              Hi Dave,

I tried exactly what your proposing and didnt get a good result, i ended up having to strip all the styrene off and resanding the hull. A complete waste of styrene and time!

Thanks everyone for heading off a disaster. I found a place that stocks Eze-cote a nice Sunday drive with the RSM (Residential Sergeant Major) away.
