Made this neat little chimney for my pal Duckies canal barge

The nice feature is the chimney flare
This was done in the lathe, with a length of flat steel bar, having a rounded and polished edge and oiled.

The flat bar was rested on top of the lathe tool, for support and the edge of the steel bar was pushed against the tube end, forcing the brass tube to roll out.

      The process is called “Spinning”

The brass tube was annealed first, to soften the brass

Well thanks for that Bob, I only asked about it yesterday afternoon and there it is for all to see, I don’t mind you publishing my lack of turning and metal work skills, we all have our weakness’s don’t we.
Had a good talk at our club meeting the other week and learn how to solder properly, so learning all the time.
I don’t think Bob minds doing these little jobs for me though, perhaps its a break from the intricacies of his cable laying project, have you seen it?
He did me the soldering of the back rails of the boat and added some nice brass balls on the ends, what a clever chap, and you know the old saying ” A friend in need is a friend in deed”
So once again Bob , Thank you.

Perhaps he will put up the rails and balls picture for you , I’m forgotten how!

Here are the rails Bob made for me earlier, mentioned in the earlier part of this thread

Nice job hey , just ready to put on to the boat!

Here is also a picture of the finished chimney Bob turned out yesterday

He wasn’t satisfied with the earlier picture and added a flange on the bottom whilst I watched and learned

And there’s the man himself at his lathe, so the chimney is ready for paint and then a smoke unit fitted

So all in all a good day, and I did my bit helping him to get out his main drive shaft on GE that he wanted to replace the bearings so felt that I’d helped somewhere along the line

Just another post to let you see the finished chimney

And another to let Mark see that it wasn’t the MB system or Microsoft at fault but my stupidity at getting the titles wrong, everything alright now, just don’t get me started with my dog pictures.

Chimney with my themed mooring weight and another one! (can’t stop me now!)

With my themed watering cans, they were bought at a florists shop, don’t usually go in them but just saw the watering cans in a floral display outside.

What a great addition the chimney is to my build, thanks again Bob!.
Perhaps I should name it “Bobs Boat” ,but there again perhaps not.

The chimney and stuff look really nice with the canal style transfers

Now show us a few pictures of the barge please

                      Where does the chimney go?

How about a picture of the stern end showing the handrails etc

Bob’s rails and fancy bits on the ends (Balls)
Only putting small seats on each side not all the way round, as I don’t want to hide the workmanship on the rails.

Front gas locker, hinges made from single brass picture hooks, see I can do a bit of metal work !.

Hi Tony, will be starting on the final stage, the painting of the superstructure soon.
Thanks for those kind words though.
I’m one of those that’s more interested building than sailing, sailing yachts is my main interest and the last one I built was a Micro Magic by Graupner, its the only one in our club but they are sailed a lot on the east coast, the yacht of preference at Etherow is the “Fiesta”.
                                      Keep your eye on …

I’ve had another chimney made by bob, its the small one at the front for the living roon stove, getting quite good at these isn’t he!. this one has the collar at the bottom movabell so I can set it into the boat, less chance of it being knocked off Bob says
I’ve got some pictures to put on the walls when the superstructure is finished, you might like this one, its a copy of an oil painting and I’ve got the OK to use it off the painter, can you guess its Bob !, thats the other string to his bow!
The doors of the boat are as follows

I’ve come up with two idea’s for the roof vents

On the right they are furniture sliders with wooden dowel and the smaller ones on the left are brass mirror screws with plastic dowel collars underneath, will decide when the roofs on and tried them with the flower planters between.

                                        Thats all for now folks

Got a sound unit from an earlier model, didn’t have much success with it though, as soon as you put the deck on the sound was lost. Will bring it round for you to see!

On Saturday got an e-mail of Bob to say that the smaller chimney he had made was ready to be collected, can’t complain about that service can you, 24hrs and already to pick up.
Bob said bring the large chimney round as he thought it would be better with the lower collar slightly raised so it could be set into the roof and make it firmer so it couldn’t be knocked off so easily.

                                              As this one clearly shows.

So here are both chimneys, finished and painted, had to re-paint the bigger one of course as soldering the flange on higher meant the paint had to be removed on that one, still no big deal and certainly worth it to get such a pair of beauties

On arriving home had an e-mail waiting that knocked the wind out of my sails a bit, one of out club members had passed away, and he was the nicest gentleman you could ever wish to meet, and a master craftsman.
That’s his boat “The Lilly” from Windermere at the top of the club blog.
