Congrats are due here for a superb model Don and a real eye opener technique wise. I do think the title Card modelling does mislead a little surely its more grp/card composite. that said this is a modelling method I will be trying some time soon.

And yes, a working steam launch built from card is certainly something out of the ordinary!

Bob. Theres probably not much difference in strength between balsa and thickish paper or card, once you have sealed and painted it. If you resin it, it really doesnt matter what you use. In fact tissue paper would probly be fantastic once coated with resin! (be tricky getting it to hold shape first…)

Vic Smeed published plans of a 36″ sailboat made of cardboard sourced from cereal packs. Believe it or not he called it “KRISPY”.

I can confirm it works well, I built two!

Hi,

A question to Eric Moffat.

I built a Krispy when the plans were first issued and it was a joy to build, however I could not get it to sail well, so it went into the attic with some other failurs, but I keep taking it out now and again to see if I can improve how it sails, but to no avail.

Did you have any problems ?, If so, what did you do to get it to sail well ?.

Looking forward to your, or any other builders reply,

Thought you might like to see some other paper boats,they were participating in one of the Commodores challenges a few years ago and I might add they can still be seem sailing on the lake to this day.

Even got the writing just right hasn’t he

This one as got a really good turn of speed, made by our Club 500 Sec.

And last but not least a re-cycled boat from an earlier challenge to really get you thinking , no paper but from re-cycled rubbish

Martin’s one of our best recycler’s

Hope this has got you thinking a bit more, who said model boating was expensive!.

Hi,

This 800mm long 1:12.5 scale model of a Thai Long Tail Boat I designed and built uses strips cut from corn flake boxes in 2 cross diagonal layers over stringers set in forming shadows, covered with a nylon stocking and finished with Plasti-koto.

As you can see from the photos quite complex shapes can be achieved with this method of construction.

The total time for the project was about 3 months, but once under way the hull took 3 weeks from when the first stringer was put in postion to when it was ready for fitting the R/C equipment, the deck and the final coat of paint.

I hope you enjoy looking at the photos as mutch as I did building and now sailing it.
