I am building a 48 scale model of King George V (1940).  The hull is completed and I am presently working on the superstructure.

I am having difficulty in obtaining plans for:

      Crane
45 foot hard chine fast motor boat
      45 foot motor launch (clinker)
      25 foot fast motor boat

Someone suggested Norman Ough might have plans but I have not been able to track them down.

Does anyone know where plans might be available, or know of someone who has built a model who might be able to provide copies of the plans.

          Hi Phil,
The Norman Ough plans went to David MacGregor plans for quite a long time, but when he died, I believe they went to the Great Britain Trust.    As far as I know, they are not accessible to the public at the moment, but that may have changed.   Worth asking them anyway.

I have had one or two Norman Ough drawings and feel that although they appear at first glance to be hightly detailed, they do, in fact, leave a lot off!

Thanks Bob.  I have heard similar comments about the drawings.  I have found an address for the Trust at Great Western Dock, Bristol.  I might write over.  I am in Australia.  Do you know if that is a current address?

I don’t know the correct address, but I am sure that would find them as the Great Britain isn’t going anywhere.    You may even find it on Google.

Thanks Rick.  Checked him out.  No large boats.

The sea plane recovery crane would have been built by a company called Stothert & Pitt this engineering company built most of the cranes for the Royal Navy.
The company still exists although part of the Clarke Chapman group try this link
you might be able to get some information from their company archive.

There is also a fun to watch computer sim of the battleship on this site in which you get a quick look at a crane

There are also some quite good blueprints of the King George on
but you might need a CAD system to manipulate them.

The larger of the ships boats were probably built by Scott-Paines British Power Boat Company, try this link.

                      Phil,

That will be some model in 1/48th!  I saw a PoW in that scale a while back and the owner sits/lies inside it – is yours conventional Radio Control?

As to the Norman Ough drawings, they were printed in small scale in Model Boats around 1970/71 and I have the page for the 25′ Motor Boat to hand – it would be adequate for scratchbuilding in that scale.  I could forward a scan. Others I have are 32′ Cutter and Motor Cutter, 27′ Whaler, 50′ Steam picket Boat, 42′ sailing Launch and 36′ Motor Pinnace.   The other items you were after may well have been covered but I just don’t have the full series I’m afraid.

Norman Ough did not cover any other boats , apart from those mentioned . However , some details are in the Anatomy of a Ship series.
Also , on the topic of cranes , although on first glance these appear to be the same on each ship , their construction detail do differ .  When I considered PE ‘ing a set  I gave up when research meant I could only make one , but which one to choose ?

I have a drawing of one 45ft fast motor boat lying around which I got through John Lambert, but not an official Lambert production drawing. I could make a small scan. I received most of my drawings through Lambert.

The only one I’m really missing is the 42ft motorized barge. I’ve made small 1/350 models of a series of small boats and launches using their lines drawings Link

I would be interested in seeing what drawings you have of the 45 ft fast motor boat.  If I give you my email address, what drawings would you be able to provide?
