Tricky subject you chose! The steam minesweeping winches installed in "regular" sweepers were very bulky and heavy, I don`t thing they could be refitted on the deck of a passenger ferry. However, John Lambert sells a set of drawings for these, you may wish to try his web site.

Motor gun boats used much smaller winches, which I suppose must have been electrically driven, but seem to be too small for such a big ship.

 I agree with Davie in that probably a trawler winch would have been the best choice. For a picture of one, check the article on HMS SIR LANCELOT, right here at Model Boats, picture 6.

 For the article on Sir Lancelot just type the name in the "featured build" case on Model Boats´s home page. Once you open the article scroll down to the second picture. Under it you will see a list of pics that will open in the same place, you just need to place the cursor (no click) on the pic number you wish to look at. It´s a picture of the bridge, actually, but just fore of it is the trawling winch.

 As to the missing cranes or derricks on deck these were used to handle the accessories to the sweeping cable, i.e. a float at the end of it and an otter (like a grating) to force the outward curve ot the cable (paravanes combined both functions). However, these accessories were much smaller in coastal forces than on fleet sweepers, and maybe small enough to be manhandled. I don´t recall seeing derricks on Fairmile B´s decks, but I would need to check this.

hi Bob, her steam anchor windlasses may have looked like this and below a piccy of a steam trawl winch of around the 1940’s. made from the Mount fleet kits Sir Lancelot

heres a steam anchor windlass i’m scratch building for my new trawler build project

< made mainly from plasticard and wood, the cog teeth are little strips of electrical solder glued on with superglue then filed flat just on the top's to give the tooth's profile, the tiny bolt heads are just again electrical solder then nipped flat on 3 sides giving 6 faces,

HI Bob, regarding a plastic kit for such an individual part I think you will be lucky to source,  then it has to be the right scale!,  I’m diabetic and it plays hell with my eye sight on a daily basis I use a large base mounted magnifing glass  for making and assembling small items.

Have a the latest issue of the model boat mag,  on page 61 is a very nice piece on a armed trawler with close ups of paravanes, depth charge equipment and deck guns. Might be a help with naval JD.

If your dear lady is anything like mine then she must tolerate sawdust, drawings all over the floor and the smell of fiberglass throughout the house and being constantly asked if a model looks right form a particular angle.

I suppose that being upstairs is better than being at the pub but does she mind you going off to the lake or does she take an active part in your hobby?
