Hi all you model boat builders and readers

I have just completed my first scratch built model trawler and boy am I happy with the result. I have a small problume though which I would be really greatful if some one can advise me on. I have fitted a prop shaft that came as a kit to the model and thought I should test the hull and mechanics for any leaks in the test tank (bath) The hull was fantastic and showed no issues of leakage more then I can say about the prop. After about 10 mins I noticed droplets of water entering the hull from the prop shaft. Dispite making the fitting as tight as possible and not to cause drag on the running gear it just dosen’t seem to stop. I fitted a prop feeder that I applied some greas down this has slowed the leak down but my cause some drag. Can anybody advise on what I can do to resolve the issue?

      Looking forward to any surgestions

I’ve always found that oiler feeders attached to the propshaft never allow enough grease into the shaft to stop water getting in.

i have always prefared to block one end with your finger after taking the shaft out and injecting grease in with a syringe till it’s full. i also use vaseline mixed with graphite or copper slip mixed up rather than grease.

        less drag .

Neil. I assume that the inboard end of the propshaft is beneath the waterline? You could try using felt washers either end of the tube , or just on the inner side. Smother them with grease and adjust your nuts for zero play (but not binding). Or nylon washers. This may help. I also take it that you have adjusted the shaft for absolutely minimum end-play.Having the shaft too full of grease can increase the workload on the motor dramatically if you are not careful. Failing that, if its only a very small amount of water coming in, position a sponge underneath and check it every 30 mins or so ??? Ashley
