In a moment of inspiration (or madness) I decided that the coming winter project should be to build the three sisters of Olympic, Titanic and Britannic.

In that same mad moment I opted to 'go big' and use the Trumpeter 1:200 Titanic kit as the base for this project.

I bought two kits off the Internet but luckily found a complete kit on facebook with loads of extras including an extra lighting set, paints and tools.

WOW! Holy smoke, three Trumpeter 1/200th kits! How many winters were you planning on this taking?

Anticipating Ashley's comment – 'two of those would make up into an incredible catamaran.'

I can only guess what Dave M would have said but I expect it might have needed moderation.

                    Hi Chris

As an idea it has been floating in the back of my mind for a few months but became a more serious prospect a couple of weeks ago when I was helping Liz to empty Daves workshop.

                    Hi Colin

Tritanic! Did that just come to you or were you just waiting for an idiot to propose building all three? I can imagine the fun that Dave would have had at my expense, but it is partially his fault as I was sat in his chair looking at his well ordered workshop when I decided to take on the project.

He will be looking down on us and fuming that he can't comment on my extravagant madness or the fact that I am building not one but three plastic kits.

                    Captain Bob

Im not starting until late November but I will post progress reports, I have to decide if I build them one at a time or all three together, both prospects have their merits.

                    Hi Richard

I have little else to do during the cold months, I was going to build another quarter scale Mosquito but since the doc banned me from flying RC planes I have lost interest in that project.

Thanks Paul for your reply to my question

Better to build only one model and have three sets of ships nameplates handy

Otherwise, you may be meeting Dave, sooner than expected!

                        Hi Bob

Building one and swapping name plates is certainly one idea, but would it fool the experts because, as you know, the three ships are all slightly different.

Besides I have already bought the kits and I am looking forward to using my new indoor workshop, which will be a lot warmer than the outdoor one.

Perhaps, when you have had enough of the three models. gathering dust. they could go to a Boat Museum for reference?

Paul, I take it you are not contemplating working model?. Always a temptation with the big Trumpeter kits. I've always found HMS Rodney/Nelson a bit alluring in that respect.

Lets see how they turn out before planning their future.

                              Hi Colin

No I don't intend to motorise these kits, they are fated to forever sail within the confines of a display cabinet.

                                Hi Paul

Thinking about it now, the idea of building three model Titanic Liners, side by side, does have it`s attraction!

The spectacular appearance of three large models under construction would be fascinating to see. no matter at what stage of completion

So with my blessing…..Get crackin`…..With my apologies for our leg pulling

Ashley would not be so bold as to suggest using them as a Catamaran, however the idea has merit…..

The worst part of a big kit is the anticipated difficulty of all those bits, but once you get into it it gets manageable.

Berenger bought me the Ming Tortoise heavy tank kit ages ago and I had to psyche myself up for that. It had loads of bogies all with suspension and little wheels, but I watched a geezer on you tube making one and he grouped lots of components together and worked on them all in stages and that was the way to go.

I take it you saw the March 2020 edition of Model Boats Magazine where a chap built the three in 1/350th scale? He motorised them and put a pretty impressive lighting system in them as well.

I am leaning towards building all three together as its easier on the problem solving and quicker / cheaper when spray painting the large areas.

                                      Hi Ashley

I find the larger kits easier than fiddly little ones, even though the big kits have more fiddly bits in them.

                                      Hi Richard

I don't recall the article but I will dive into my back copies and have a look.

                                          Hi Larry

I can foresee a future where I am happily displaying my fleet of White Star ships on the Bridgewater.

The vision foretells of the only ever time when, in the middle of summer, an iceberg is sighted on the canal.

The vision ends with all three ships being sunk.

As I have no intention of diving in the fetid depths to recover my fleet I think it safer to let them sail within the confines of a display case.wink

I had thought about doing a waterline diorama depicting the Harland and Wolff yard, but to encompass all of the ships, docks, cranes etc would require an even larger and more unwieldy display case.

                                                Hi Ashley

                                                  Paul,

Ships always look their best at sea in a waterline situation. No need for docks or cranes etc.. I have a large collection of small 1:1250 waterline models whih are displayed for comparison purposes. Just a few shown here. You can see Titanic compared with other ships.
