I would like to build a wood boat kit ,of the "speed boat" type.

My LHS`s have a few self build aircraft kits BUT no boat kits at all. I have looked online and found preformed plastic hull kits but no self biuild wood.

Many years ago I remember keep seeing 2 kits, stiletto and rapier, do not know the maker of kit BUT that's the type I remember.

Can anyone point me to anything? or plans,i have built aircraft before BUT no knowledge of boat building. How do you find plans by the way?

Check out SL:EC too. They do traditional speedboat and launch kits.

I have a couple of unbuilt wooden Huntsman ( or Swordsman ) kits I could dig out of the loft .If you're interested we could discuss price after I've had a quick look at them . I'm in South Yorkshire .

If you're an aeromodeler you'll have no problem. The Sea Hornet model , as an example was popular for a long time and built by school boys and beginners with little trouble. It makes a great looking boat too.

The SLEC range of vintage models is fine BUT they are more-or-less faithful reproductions of the original designs. Typically these were powered with small diesel engines and had no radio, so you'll need to adapt them for electric power and R/C gear. To an old lag like me this is almost second nature but it might cause one or two problems for a novice. The SLEC Fairey Huntsman 31 is the exception but it was not designed with the first-time builder in mind. I gather there's a full kit review coming up shortly in Model Boats magazine.
Aeronaut make a number of all-wood kits which are designed for contemporary equipment. These might be a better choice for you. Plans for all sorts of model boats can be found on several suppliers' websites – here's a popular one **LINK**
Whatever you choose there's a wealth of experience on this forum and someone will probably know the answer to any problem you encounter – unless it involves Tamco radios with Hitec servos!

spire dux nov 16 013.jpgHi Gary,

Sea Hornet is a good starter boat, the kit originally designed in the 1960's as Dave says robust ply construction for ic power in those days, I built a smaller balsa version and then the original Aerokits version, no need for anything high-tech, goes well with a brushed 600 size motor & buggy NiCad pack.

Lots of help there chaps, thanks very much.

I was not really thinking about the power train. I just thought slapping a brushless motor in would be easy.

Just had a quick look and see that water cooling of motor and esc is common!

I will have a good look at the above info ,perhaps asking when I pick something for advice. Good to know that I can ask here for help /advice on the probable build

For what you are thinking about, watercooling of motor and ESC should be quite unnecessary. A small brushless motor and LiPo battery will give you more than enough power and you could probably manage well enough with a conventional NiHH/Brushed motor setup.
