When I was a little boy my granddad (Les Rowell, founder of Lesro models) begun building me my first model boat…..the Sportman. However sadly he died before finishing it.

That was 20 years ago and the model and sat preserved in my loft ever since. The models structure is fully built however it is just a shell and requires water proofing, painting and the mechanics fitting.

This is unquestionably the last Lesro model ever built by his brilliant hand and as such I do not want to mess it up being a novice. I believe I can fit the model out machnically but am not a painter. I therefore need someone who reallys know what they are doing to water proofing and paint the boat.

Can anyway assist or know of someone who could professionally paint this for me. Thanks

I live in Norwich, Norfolk, UK.

          Hi John,

I've just uploaded an album from my recently refurbished Sportsman II. We built it back in 1989 when I was 14. Since then it has been siting in my dad's loft before being moved to my loft. Finally, and after much nagging by my sons, I have got it out and back to sea worthiness.

It was clear that my early attempts at painting with enamel paint weren't going to be good enough. So I went the route of acrylic spray paints from halfords. You will see that most postings about painting will hark back to preparation being the key. A lot of time was spent priming, filling and sanding but it is all worth it.

Twin prop on the sportsman was a dream of mine, as was bushless motors. In the end costs meant that I stuck with single prop and a thumper brushless with 2 x 7.2v packs in series. The difference in performance was insane. Gone are the days of 20mins of decreasing performance with a lead acid battery and a 540 motor from my radio controlled car to now 1h15mins at full throttle.

Would love to here back on how the project is going. (More fittings have been added since this pick)

          Regards

          Dave
