I am in the process of building the Tamar Class Lifeboat from Model Slipway and am at the stage of fitting the motors. Has anyone got a simple solution to ensuring that the motors align with the props?

Vince. I am not familiar with this setup (Tamar) and no doubt thwere are 1,000 people out there looking at these posts who HAVE built one, but…

A solid coupling can be useful, get everything glued in and the replace with a wonky coupling and things should be not so far off. I like to use double couplings, or those nice rubber sleeve types from Marks Model Bits, as they tolerate some misalignment, and a double coupler will tolerate a LOT of misalignment.

            Hello Vince

I alway`s make a solid tube mandrel on the lathe, with a hole for the motor and a hole for the prop shaft.

Allow enough space between the shaft ends for the coupling

Just take your time and be satisfied that all is well before finally glueing in position

Thanks guys – I knew it wasn't going to be easy. Unfortunately I don't have a lathe to make such a solid temporary coupling but I can see that that would be the best option. If I have a peice of metal rod I could drill a hole through it which will fit tightly over the prop shaft screw thread and motor shaft. If not I suppose I could use dowel.smiley

Vince. Those red plastic u/j type joints, if you are using them, you can get solid sections or a double spline to connect two u/j rigidly together.

Marks model bit.. mark will make a solid coupling for the same price (i think) as a rubber type, a good investment if making any more models.

Not cheap but a good investment if you intend to build more models.

Dave. Considering the amount of models most of us build over the years, a true bargain I think.
