In my mid years I built several r/c boats all of which I left in England when I moved to Spain. I have just completed after many years in cupboard the billings kit of Calypso and it has whetted my appetite again. Now recently having celebrated my 60 th I find I have up to £500 to spend on my rekindled hobby. Does anyone have suggestions to an enjoyable kit to buy. I was looking at fireboats and tugs but there is so much in the market I am confused. As I live in Spain there is not the opportunity to pop into the local model shop for advice. Any help or guidance would be apreciatted.

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum. Unless you are keen on a wooden model I would suggest anything from the Model Slipway range is pretty good. I have built Conserver (no longer available unfortunately) and Tsekoa II both of which were very enjoyable to construct. Their Al Khubar makes a very nice tug.

If your after a tug then I would have to agree with Robin. Tugs dont appeal to me as such I lean more towards Grey Funnel stuff but I have to recommend Model Slipway to anyone. However I do digress from RN subjects from time to time and I am just finishing off my Conserver that was in the loft for a few years (there is a progress album on her in my albums) and it is a very pleasurable build and I have built their mini Drifter and Vliestrom which are equally as good value. The quality is excellent, the prices very competitive and as for Jackie’s customer services, well it puts everyone else into the second class category.

Thanks guys I have looked at their website and it is very informative unlike some of them. I think I will be looking to them when I decide what to get. The more I look around the more confused I get but i am sure I will settle on something. The one that is catching my eye at the moment is the robbe duesseldorf fire boat. Anyone been there. Also does anyone have any information on the Washington Model Boat club as I was a member there but is was 10 years ago. Many thanks for the info. ian

R****r Pond is still sailed (sorry I have issue saying that word) it gives me a facial tick. Yes Washington does use it and still exists. Of course if your from that neck of the woods you could consider a North East Tug such as built by Tyne Models (NOT WEAR MODELS)

Dont know anyone who has built one but have seen a couple of complete ones and they are very very nice.

Thanks Mike. Had a look at their site but they all seem to be semi kit boats which I assume are hull and superstructure and stick them together. Also they seem to be a bit pricey. Don’t worry I am not from THERE but I did spend some time up there. sweaty sock land was home

Well good luck with the decision making. Tyne Models are semi kits yes but they seem quality although sometimes it can work out a bit more pricey. Model SLipway include everything and the plans and instructions leave very little to be desired. There is always Mountlfeet as well, they have a few nice tugs too.

Marks Model Boats also have a new tug semi kit out which is a very competitive price at £175.  The price at £175 includes motors and couplings and Korts.  All that is otherwise needed is a few sheets of ply or plastic card so its more complete that some full kits.

there is also a build link on Model Boat Mayhem

                            Hi ian,
I too can fully recomend model slipway, excellent. Where abouts in Spain are you, some areas have good model boat clubs, many with an international membership.
