      HI All

Has anyone built a 1:200 scale Mantua Titanic ? or a 1:84 Panart Amerigo Vespucci or a 1:72 Caldercraft Victory    ??.  Any comments would be much appreciated as to how the build went.  I have read the MB’s Victory review, but all the more comments the better, for a newcomer like me.  I was thinking of a Speedline Severn lifeboat, as we have one here in Aberdeen and the coxwain and crew are really helpful, and seem dead keen on me puitting together a radio control job, ( I guess it would look good out in the harbour wizzing about saving dolls and action men and the like….!!

Any thoughts if theres anyone out there who’d like a chat…

      Cheers

       Chris P.

        Hi Chris

If its any help I have built a Model Slipway Trent Lifeboat and I also had a lot of assistance from a very helpful crew (there are some pictures in my gallery if you are intrested)

I certainly would have no problem in helping with advice, and I know that the other members would also be only to happy to help.

        All the best

        Paul

hi chris, there is just one problem with the Severn from Speedline, and that is ( if anything like the Trent from the same company) there are prescious few instructions, and you are virtually scratch building and working out the problems and build sequences youerself.

that is OK if your skills are up to this sort of work, but the trent was big and awesome enough, ( and I speak from experience having owned one) but I can imagine the Severn is even more daunting.

Don’t forget the cost of these super kits, and they are absolutely superb, is well over £700 at last count, and it’s a lot to spend and then never complete.

I’ve seen a few trents on ebay that have never been started, or partly finished, and I think that people buy them thinking that because they are advertised as a kit, then the build process would be easy.

sadly for the inexperienced with stars in their eyes, they are a very daunting prospect.

However finish one and there is not a finer model to display. the brass etching and quality is second to none.

if you want to speak to someone about the Trent model contact Troon Lifeboat Station and ask to speak to the mechanic.

last I heard he was building one of speedlines.

          cheers,neil.

Hi Fat Man and Neil     !!

Thanks for the responce…. I’m looking to do something dramatic, as the last thing seemed to fill the needs of the local museum, I guess I,m full of myself at the mo.  The Jotika Victory and the severn look ace to base but I agree wholeheartedly I need to fully have my nut in the right place to start something like this.  I have unlimited access to the Severn boat, with the gtood and kind grace o0f the crew, and coupled with the fact I was a cox of a lifeboat for about ten years in another life I guess I may give it a go….Ta anyway for the nudge, and I’l go and sleep on it…

            Cheers and thanks agin

            Chris

              Chris

I am about two years into the build on HMS Victory, its a cracking kit but lots of it, I reckon ive spent 750 hrs on it to date and do not expect completion for another 3 to 4 years. If you take it on be aware as Keith Julier stated in his build article in model boats it is very large and requires a large work area, not a build for the dining room table. Value for money £650 approx for 6 years pleasure – definitely.

Useful additional reading – Anatomy of the Ship – HMS Victory, Arming and Fitting of the Sailing Man of War by Brian Lavery and Masting and Rigging of English Ships of War by Lees.

              Food for thought

              Mike
