      Hello Everyone.

When running my electric HMS Duke of York model boat I take the obvious precaution of bringing her in safely before the batteries might run out. This has the consequence that I'm recharging the batteries when they have perhaps a quarter of a charge remaining. She is fitted with two 6v SLA batteries as well as as a Futaba receiver pack.

Firstly, will recharging the batteries when they are only partly discharged reduce their capacity over time?

Secondly, can anyone recommend a "clever" charger that can gently charge up these types of batteries (perhaps one universal charger for both the SLAs and Futaba packs?) whilst keeping them in peak condition?

      Many thanks,

      Paul.

Paul. You are running the batteries correctly, you should not discharge them completely, and SLA batteries should be kept fully charge for maximum life span.

Maplins do small plug in SLA automatic chargers, and you should use one in preference to a Nimh charger (for instance).

SLA batteries should NEVER be charged with the same type of charger as NiMH cells. The reason is that the lead-acid type requires charging at a constant voltage while the NiMH needs a constant current. As the SLA battery becomes fully charged the charging current gradually drops to a very low value (a "trickle" charge). Most NiMH chargers have a facility which detects the peak charge and promptly reduces the current to a steady trickle rate or cuts it off altogether. Ashley is quite correct in that you should not allow SLA batteries to become fully discharged; if you do the plates inside can become damaged and you'll never get a full charge back into them. NiMH battery packs shouldn't be allowed to drop below 1v per cell.

These folk sell all manner of batteries and battery chargers and can advise you on the best type for the purpose **LINK**

              Hi Ashley and Dave.

Many thanks for your replies. I'll keep charging my model's batteries as per your advice.

              Best wishes,

              Paul.

The myth of battery memory was always, on the very few occasions when it was checked and not put down to magic, found to be one cell in the pack being a bit weaker than its mates and not quite charging to the same level. This usually meant that it was fully discharged earlier, giving a very sudden performance drop, and the subsequent recharge didn't really improve matters. This all happened in the days of NiCad batteries, production methods are now more reliable. Having said that, over time and with use, the chemicals inside the battery, of whatever chemistry, will eventually cease to arrange themselves back in the same places, and the battery will eventually fail. With lead acid, all of the cells are in a single moulding, so, effectively, it all dies at once.

SLA require a regulated voltage, alkaline (NiMH, NiCad) require regulated current, so using the right type of charger is necessary to get the best number of charge/recharge cycles out of the battery.
