This post is to ask whether anyone has had problems with the Planet R6M receiver in a boat – in particular with moisture/water. Reason for question is that I have just purchased a Planet T5 system and was somewhat taken aback with the "casing" of the receiver – basically just thin plastic sheet folded around the receiver circuit board and secured with plastic tape. No sealant is used so water could easily be splashed on to the electronics. I have a second question – the user guide says 100 metre range absolute maximum – has anyone experienced a practical issue with range (in general 100 metres should be adequate if it performs reliably at that range).

I purchased the Planet system because I could no longer purchase the Acoms 2.4 GHz 2 channel system (which has proved very reliable for me).

Ian. I think the answer to the first bit is…do not allow water in your boat !! I dont think any receivers are water proof as such. A poly bag put around the box would sort you out easily if you have a damp boat (speaking from experience as one or two of mine positively FLOOD for various reasons!)

Range..no idea. I seem to have read on a post that the range is barely 100m, and I think reception at the max would depend on a number of factors…weather, boat set up and battery freshness etc etc as to how close to the 100 you could get a reliable signal. You pays your money and so on.

            Hi Ian

I guess the receiver could be made a bit more waterproof as long as the aerial is still outside the waterproof container. The aerial in my opinion is too short, but not yet look to see if it can be extended.

I use the T5 for my Goblin sailing boat. Used it at Tilgate park lake in Crawley. She can get to the middle of the quite large lake without any problems. Not sure I would want my boat more than 100m away.

              Ashley & Andy,

Thank you for replying to my topic.

Wrt aerial length, the manufacturers usually insert something like "do not alter the length of the aerial lead" in their user guide. Aerials are tuned components and need to be matched to the input stage of the receiver (same concept applies to transmitters ie transmitter aerial has to be matched to the transmitter output stage). "Matching" in the context of radio frequency systems means ensuring that the power flows efficiently – if there is a mismatch then not all of the radio frequency power will be used effectively. If any on this forum have experience/background in RF then you will recall that if an input or output is not "matched" you get an unwanted reflection of energy (in a transmission line this gives rise to "standing waves" and well engineered systems are matched to minimise standing waves). This is a rather long winded way of saying that altering the length of the receiver aerial may reduce the performance/sensitivity of the receiver.

I assume that the planet receiver is mounted in a flimsy plastic "jacket" in order to minimise weight – the Planet system is primarily aimed at the small RC aircraft market where every gram saved is worthwhile.

I noted on another thread about Planet RC system that Dave Milbourn has found that the pulse widths are not always correct – in particular I think that 1.5 msec should be the midpoint and on one of the Planet channels Dave measured a different pulse width – I'll wire up my Planet system to a servo and see if it performs normally.

I have yet to see any waterproof receiver for model use. Every single one has rather large holes to allow things like servos and ESCs and such to be plugged in.

While, in more olde worlde radios, the antenna length was roughly tuned and "OK for a given value of OK", 2.4GHz aerials are not. The active bit is very accurately tuned. On some sets you can change the RX aerial to a longer one, but this is NOT a longer aerial. It is the same length aerial on the end of a longer lead. It gives you more flexibility on where you can site your radio and aerial. but probably at the cost of some signal loss and thus range reduction due to it having to go down the length of wire. Of course, putting the aerial in a better place might more than make up for the signal loss – a case of swings and roundabouts.

Pulse width can be a bit of a problem – such "standard" as there is only requires that the pulse be between 1 and 2 milliseconds, with a "quiet" bit between pulses for the RX to servo connection. Most manufacturers have the good sense to center it on 1.5 mS, with the control timing limits at about 0.25 mS either side. Others have their own ideas so that they can stay within the limits, but still be different, probably in the hope of creating a "lock-in" situation.

Howes sell a hard cased version of the receiver (7 channel) for £18. More robust but still not waterproof.
