      Hi Forum Members,

Please could you help me with a problem that has developed with my Ripmax Speed controller P-Extra BS10.

I have it installed in an old Billings fishing boat The Progress 5.

I have an old 2 channel futaba 27MHz radio to control this.

The motor will operate OK in forward mode but I get a strange noise like a high metallic hum from the controller when in reverse mode and the motor will not run.

The other strange thing is that if I disconnrct the Futaba receiver battery pack the radio transmitter will still operatte the receiver as if its getting its power fed back through the speed controller from the 6 volt motor battery.

Can the speed controller be tested in anyway or do you think that it is faulty and will need replacing?

      Thank you.

Sounds like your speed controller has a Battery Eliminator Circuit in it – which powers the receiver from the main battery. This is deliberate and saves having to have a separate battery for the receiver. If you disconnect the receiver battery and run just from the main one, does the speed controller behave itself and work properly then?

I think Keith is right, the controller has a battery elimination circuit so if you want to run the receiver from a separate battery there is often a loop of wire sticking out of the controller somewhere which needs to be cut.

If the test suggested by Keith doesn't work then there may well be a fault – perhaps the reversing relay is not operating for some reason

Probably not worth spending a lot of time on it but if you buy a new one then do make sure it will work with the old Futaba 27mhz sets as I think that the signal from these is slightly different to the one from modern sets. – you might need a new radio as well!

              Hi Keith & Colin,

Thank you for a quick reply.

The speed controller still will not work in reverse with the receiver batteries disconnected.

I agree then that it is not worth bothering with and will replace it along with a new UHF Radio Link set.

Also it gives me a chance to tidy up the wiring inside the boat at the same time.

              Thank you both once again.

The old equipment is fine while it still works but when it fails then it is indeed time to upgrade!
