      Hello Everyone.

I'm re-wiring a model boat with 4 drive motors fed by 2 ESCs. I intend to run each pair of motors from the ESCs in parallel.

I was advised by my local model shop to ensure that the lengths of the wiring between the ESCs and the motors were the same.

The practical problem I have with this is that whilst the two outboard motors are housed at the same length along the hull the inboard motors are staggered, one in front and to the side of the other, to allow for correct positioning of the propshafts. If I set up wires of the same length then the net result is that some of the wires (nearer the ESCs) will be of excess length and will have to be stowed somewhat and may look untidy.

Is it absolutely necessary to follow this advice or can the wires be cut to different lengths?

      Many thanks,

      Paul.

Sorry to say that this is patent nonsense, unless there's a difference of several metres and the cable is marginal on cross-section. The only rules are to make sure that the cable is thick enought to carry the current (e.g. 14AWG is good for 32A) and that all power cables are kept as short as reasonable, within the bounds of the installation. I once had a customer who had run the main power cables from the battery at the back of the model to the two speed controllers in the bow and back to the motors amidships. Apart from the RFI implications this is very expensive if you use silicon cable!
The only other caveat is that certain ESC manufacturers regards shortening any fitted cables as voiding the warranty.

Dave is being very polite in merely saying that this is nonsense, either the chap at the shop is is complete fool or he has a load of cable that he wants to get rid of.

Has this idiot imparted any other pearls of wisdom 'such as boats don't work so well when they get wet.'

Seriously if you have taken any other bits of his advice as being gospel I would urge you to check before proceeding any further with the build.

            Good luck

            Paul

Thanks chaps – I'm glad I checked with your good selves. I did think at the time that the impact of slightly different wire lengths would be minimal at worst. Perhaps he meant to advise me to ensure that the wire lengths to the positive and negative terminals of each motor were the same, but he didn't say that specifically.

              Thanks again,

              Paul.
