Basic question for most of you chaps but does the bow thruster run in conjuction with the throttle.

NOcolin, it runs independently on a seperate chanel of your radio…usually on a simple left right switch to give thrust to either side of the boat.
if you want to go the whole nine miles, you can put a variable speed esc to the motor for slowing or upping the speed.
they usually run on 7.2 volt motors, but most people just link them up to the main 6 or 12 volt propulsion battery.i tend to do that myself.

Hi Neil. I use a spek Dx7 mode 2 and the bow thruster is on the left stick side to side but when you operate it the props start spinning should it do that.

            Cheers

I can’t help but conclude that all of your problems hitherto have been because you are using a radio which has previously been set up to fly a model helicopter. As I explained, there should be no interaction between the LH thruster stick and the LH throttle stick apart from a small “creep” caused by any slight and inadvertent vertical movement of the stick when you move it horizontally to operate the thruster. I would bet that there is a channel “mix” programmed in there somewhere – my guess would be throttle/cyclic and tail rotor channels. You should consult your DX7 manual and remove all non-standard programs e.g. mixes, exponential/differential servo travel, and then save this “standard” set-up as a new model in the Tx memory.
If you really want to change radios then I would suggest a Futaba Skysport 4 on 2.4GHz. This is a proven set from a very reputable manufacturer and the radio is non-computerised so such problems as those you are experiencing with the complex Spektrum set simply could not occur. If you do buy one then also obtain the parts to make the LH Up/Down stick spring-centred as well as the RH stick.

I set the bow thruster up in my Armidale class patrol boat using one of Dave Milbourn’s (ACTion Electronics) excellent P94 units. This gives control of both motors, plus the bow thruster which, in my case as I use Mode 1, is controlled by vertical movement of the left stick, through a separate ESC. The throttle is on the right stick, as per normal mode 1 practice.

The bow thruster can be seen in the photo, but its ESC is hidden by the edge of the deck aperture. The blue and yellow wires attached to it are visible, though.

Peter. What radio do you use.

Colin, I use a Futaba TXE6A, which is somewhat overkill, but it’s a left over from my aeromodelling days. Any 4 channel set would do.

Think we have sorted the problem out with the bow thruster, many thanks to Jerome/Wife at SHG Models who i visited today at his home for their hospitality.
