Grandson & I had a brilliant day Boxing Day, the maiden voyage of the Alice Upjohn which has taken almost exactly 2 years to complete. She went like a dream, only 2 problems, slight list to stbd, corrected by shifting the battery across a bit & the brass insert came out of the red plastic u/j in the prop shaft. Easily sorted with super glue. Very many thanks to all who answered my specific questions & for the other answers I found elsewhere on the forum.

      What next?

I want to do something with a bit more scratch type building, rather than assembling ready made kit parts, I had in mind a Clyde Puffer. I have a picture, stern view of the Snowflake, on which the wife's grandfather used to crew around the Bristol channel. From that picture she had the look of a puffer so I've done some digging on the www & lo & behold she was a Clyde Puffer that spent pretty well all her working life in the Bristol Channel. She was built as Maid of Lorn by Burrell & Co in 1893, sold to a Cornish company in 1896 who sold her 12m later to a Combe Martin owner. She stayed in the Bristol channel till1946, when she was sold out to the Greek islands and last heard of in 1990. A fascinating story, an exiled Clyde Puffer, & how my wife & I came to meet.

Any way, long story even longer, I'd like to do the Snowflake, at 1/24th. I now have half a dozen pictures of her. I don't want to do a generic puffer but dont know enough about them to work out what cant be seen in the photos. Now the big question, would I be able to get plans of the Maid of Lorn as she was built from anywhere?

      Thanks

      Stephen

From your post, you know want you want to build, so buy a plan for the boat you want, scale it to the size you want, then go get pics off the internet of the original .

It is then down to your skill, your determination & your capability , to put the gathered knowledge into a finished model.

          Only you can do it

Exactly Kev but I need a plan, the right plan, to start with. Does anyone know of a source for Burrell & Co puffer plans please. If not the Maid of Lorn then perhaps a sister ship.

After all if you wanted to build a Leander class frigate you would buy a Leander class frigate plan, not any old generic frigate plan.

              Thanks

              Stephen

You will probably find it difficult to source plans of a specific vessel of that vintage.

Sarik sell Phil Thomas' plan of Inchcolm built in 1909 which should be pretty accurate. You could have it rescaled to whatever size you want.

Thanks very much Colin. I think that might end up being the way forward. I've sent a couple of emails to see if there is perhaps an accessible Burrell & Son archive somewhere as it would be nice to have the right plan.

                    Hi Stephen,

                    Ref, your Clyde Puffer,

Others may have already suggested the book The Clyde Puffer by Dan McDonald. I managed to get a copy from World of Books, There`s a good few pictures in it and it`s a good read. There might be something in it that may be of help to you.

I`m building a Clyde Puffer ( on scratch building ) from plans by Vic Smeed. A slow build , but good fun.

Best of luck on your project

                    Regards, Jim.

                      Hi Jim

I've got a copy of that book, fascinating reading and some superb pictures, sadly none of Maid of Lorn. I've been watching your progress with interest and hopefully will be following along in a while. May I ask where you got your Vic Smeed plan from?

                      Stephen

                        Hi Stephen,

Have a look at Sarik Hobbies website, hundreds of model plans available from them, including Vic Smeed's

                        Regards Ray

                          Hi Stephen.

I got my Puffer plan from Sarik Hobbies as Ray mentioned. Mine is of Vic Smeeds Lochinvar. I had the size doubled to give me a bigger model. As you`ve seen on my postings it`s a slow build.

I look forward to seeing how you progress with yours.

                          Regards, Jim.
