good news indeed, but why are hobby stores still selling the old stuff.

I guess not many of us will be clearing out our cupboards and drawers of all those old tins of paint! I must have a good few tins from boats, trains and planes.

I would think that as long as you use common sense and a well ventilated area, and don't stick your nose over the opened tin and inhale you will probably be fine.

Too many people without a proper job getting in the way of those who have one.

Not sure but I think I read that it was an EU directive. But obviously Humbrol wouldn't want a UK and a European formula.

                  Hi All,

I just hope the new formula is still oil based, I'm not keen on water based stuff as it seems to have very little covering power .

My 500 tins from the last 50 years may become collectors items ??

                  Regards Ray

I'm sure it's perfectly safe to use old stock in such small tinlets. The MEK is just an anti skinning agent. You could probably just put in a drop or two of thinners before putting the lid back on instead.

The quantities of the offending agent are likely to be so small that the risk is theoretical only.

it is a good idea to put a couple of drops of thinner/white spirit in the tin after you have used it to replace moisture lost when the tin is open.

i also store my tins upside down. Whether these measures make any difference….? Who knows.

Certainlyin this weather I have been adding water to my larger tins of Rustins acrylic paint as the lids after a while never fit properly, and the Acrylic paints seem to be much worse for this as the gunge around the lid surfaces can easily dry out while you are using it. Two of my tin lids are positively loose and the tins are kept in a tight ziploc bag to prevent drying out.

I'm not sure if we are getting confused now. As far as I was always aware 'MEK' is Methyl Ethyl Ketone and is a readily used and available solvent used for gluing plastics, particularly the ABS types.

The stuff we are talking about here is an anti-skinning agent and is called Methyl Ethyl Ketoxime or 'MEKO'. We'll have everyone screaming that plastic glue is carcinogenic next!

Yes, it is all a bit confusing. I don't know about plastic glues being carcinogenic but the volatile glues are certainlly not good for you in poorly venticalted spaces. Cyanocrylate has a very bad effect on me so I am unable to use it except the odourless types sparingly. The various types of liquid platsic glues all evaporate rapidly (including acetone) and have given me headaches after gluing sessions.

Just to clarify, the point I was making Colin, to avoid confusion, is that we are talking about MEKO here, not MEK.

Humbrol have just released their latest acrylic paints in dropper bottles. I saw it on a You Tube review. However the review was rather pathetic as the guy just tried them out on a piece of card rather than on the plastic kits etc. they are intended for so it's not really clear how good they are.

I'm as surprised as you. I spent the late 60's and early 70's in a analytical lab where the fume cupboards didn't work. We ate at our benches, we made tea and coffee on the the lead topped bench and the canteen sent a lady with a trolley of cakes , sandwiches, chocolate bars for us to buy.

I was always surprised when you went get certain reagent to be told you couldn't use it anymore as it wasn't safe now but was ok last week.

On paints, I sometimes use Humbrol and sometimes acrylics. Acrylics are great for figure painting. I must have spent years painting Games Workshop figures for my son and me to use in games. Although I painted an Italeri S100 completely in acrylics
