I think it depends to some extent what materials you usually build in and the type of craft. Also some tools don't get a lot of use but they are invaluable when you do have a need for them!

I think PermaGrit are are most folks list though and for my builds the other tools that get a lot of use are my Record scroll saw which is the only big model making tool that I have and my razor saw. Plenty of DIY tools though.

Ashley, interesting that you have a DeWalt band saw., I bet that it's a cracker? Many of my DIY tools are DeWalt and I would have loved to have got one of their scroll saws but for some reason they don't bring them into the UK! To be honest though, with decent blades the Record does everything that I need.

wish I had room for a band saw. Maybe one day

              Chris

had my perma-grit for a few years now and used it a lot

my favourite has to be my home made file which I stick on 200 grit wet and dry and 400 on the other side and renew when worn out

Obviously some folks produce great models without PermaGrit but as well as a couple of blocks I have a set of files. I think I'd really struggle without them, especially as I use a lot of birch ply which is hard to sand. I've been resisting but have come to he conclusion that I need a set of needle files!

This has been quite an expensive thread! smiley I've just ordered a set of PermaGrit rotary burrs and a set of needle files and some other bits and pieces for when I start making the windows for my builds.

The deWalt is the big one, I have a small Machine mart bandsaw as well which has a 1/4” blade and is used for the small bits and cutting curved stuff.

Not had the Permagrit that long, only wish I had it years ago!

A belt sander is the other thing I use a lot but that broke a few weeks ago, needing replacement .

My first 'go-to' tool after joining the forum was a rather large and unweildly Black & Decker jig saw. This was the only way I could cut through the 9mm plywood used for the frames. On reflection, the frames would have been fine in 5 or 6mm ply.

As soon as all 24 frames were cut, the B&D jigsaw became my 'go from' tool.

Things got a bit more refined after that and I bought my first ever Dremel. A re-chargeable Dremel Micro. It has without doubt been the 'saviour' of the my Fisher 34 project.

A Japanese razor saw and a set of needle files have also been very 'go-to'.

                        Hi All,

Yes I'd agree with George, I have a Proxxon drill (on the vice) with a collet type chuck which will hold a no.80 drill

And a few other items of equipment !!

i'm in no way bragging or being arrogant, but over the past 60 years i have probably amassed vertually every tool that i could possibly need to construct my models, and each one is my favourite, when i need to use it.

i started off at 8 years of age when my grand dad [a master cabinet and pattern maker] gave me my first bevel edged chissel and taught me how to cut shape and carve with it.

sinse then, i have saved pocket money to buy saws, chissels, and moving on to all sorts of planes, power tools and finally lathe, band saw and even my own centrifugal casting machine, which i used to make moulds for my first designed kit, the Ann Letitia Russel, which is now produced by Metcalf Models and has been the last 25 years.

there is not a tool in my workshop that is a waste of space, and at some time in a build is used for a purpose……….

so in answer to the original question………they are ALL my favourite, at the time when i need to use them.
