Hi a in need of a bit of help here. I've started Trumpeter 1/200 Titanic and am struggling with propshafts. I've found some small bore copper tube about 90 mm in length by about 2 mm diameter and will accept the M2 threaded bar my question is how do i stop water coming into the boat?? I was thinking of loads of grease but welcome suggestions

          Andy,

I think you would be better using proper 2mm propshafts with bearings at the ends. If you use plain tube then the slightest bend in the shafts will cause them to bind. Copper tubes are also too soft really, you should be using brass. These shafts from ModelBoat Bits would be ideal although there are other suppliers.

Put some oil, not grease, into the tubes and you will get no more than a few drops of water in the model which is normal. Grease will give too much resistance.

Andy. As Colin says. They might work for a bit but it’s a disaster waiting to happen!

I know some people who have used threaded rod, but you would really need to use brass tube, and by the time you have bought that you may as well buy the real thing.

The “radio active” 2mm propshaft/prop sets are dirt cheap if you are on a budget, and the shafts/tubes are very easy to cut to size however they need to be dismantled now and then and re-greased to prevent corrosion. Not a difficult job…as long as the rudder on your Titanic is easily removable.

I tried making my own propshafts in much the same way that you are suggesting, it became un-economic with any size below 15mm dia.

Also using copper as the outer tube is a bad idea as copper is to soft and it will bend the first time it bangs into a hard surface.

As the saying goes 'been there, done that'
