Yesterday, I thought I would do something different. So I built a "micro schooner" This was a tiny version of Miss Morris, that I completed recently. Both the models are shown here. The micro version took me just under two hours to build.surprise

Miss Morris was only a tiny schooner, about 100 feet long on the waterline. The micro model is one inch long on the waterline or 100 feet to 1 inch. It isn't much really, but looks better in real life than in the photograph. It has virtually no rigging, only the three stays that support the jibs on the formeast, and they are 38 swg copper wire.

              Bob,

A very pretty little sister to Miss Morris, it looks like! Any chance of another photo, giving a closer look?

                Mattias,

I am afraid it looks dreadful close-upblush No rigging, no mast doublings, masts and spars not tapered, very motley hull, in fact all the things that I dislike about models. I don't suppose I will be making any more, but it doesn't look half so bad in real life. Close ups can destroy one's reputation.sad

Close up pictures always make the finish of models look dreadful. Just like recordings, the slightest discrepancy looks/sounds awful.

Ultimately you can only get so close before it is not worth the taking (or move out a bit).

Not much scope there though with something that size! I have no doubt it looks perfectly acceptable at normal viewing distances “in the flesh” as it were.

I agree. Those 100 feet to 1 inch models of steamers that are so popular on Ebay look quite good at a distance, but close up photographs reveals that they are not as neat as they appear. I really prefer 32 feet to an inch. At that scale, I can get good detail in, and at 25 feet to the inch, even more. This one is 32 feet to 1 inch – Imperial Star – I never got round to putting it on here because of lack of interest during the build, but always one of my favorites. I should really stick to this scale.smiley

Bob. As I see it, the use for the micro scale vessels is in numbers. Making a diorama harbour with a gaggle of schooners in, or something similar would be effective and be more achievable than a much larger model using your big vessels.

I thought the amount of detail you managed to put on such a small deck is impressive, That it doesn’t stand up to close scrutiny is neither here nor there.

                        Ashley,

Again, I agree with you. Our local ship model club made a huge diorama of Trafalgar, each ship being about two inches long. The models themselves were very poor, but looking on the diorama as a whole, I must admit that it looked magnificent, The board it was on was folding, and opened out, with all the ships in their appointed positions, it must have been about ten feet square. It was made for an exhibtion –
