A few years ago I made a model Fairey Swordsman from a depron kit. It produced a great model which, now fitted with a brushless motor goes really well. Does anyone produce plans for depron model boats, I'd like to make another?

          Hi Peter

Never heard of a Swordsman being made from Depron.

The only ones I know about are timber construction.

How big is your Swordsman and would be interested to see a photo. Set up an album and then when you post, click on the camera icon above the text inputting box to add photos.

Bit of a Google threw up a post on Model Boat Mayhem forum and an earlier one from you on this forum about them.

          Cheers, Chris

            Hi All,

Depron is so cheap compared with ply it's worth having a go, the RC boys are using V I T R E X underlay from DIY stores 19nr 5 mm sheets 600mm X 858mm X 19 sheets for around £18 UHU POR glue or epoxy, that's cost effective ?

            Glass cloth and very strong

            Regards Ray

            Depron Sea Queen anybody ?

Most smaller balsa construction models can be made with Depron. The Ezebilt range lend themselves to Depron.

The finished haul can be strengthened using the Ron Reece stocking and resin method, and makes a very strong, light shell which sail very well.

If you feel your model is a little flimsy in some areas, it is very easy to add extra Depron strengthening struts.

My Swordsman is 16" long, so 1/24th scale. It weighs 20oz with the batteries, 13oz without. It's currently fitted with a CF28/22 brushless outrunner and a 7.2V NiMH battery. I could go a bi higher on the battery voltage and I could go lighter with a LiPo battery but either would, I think, make it difficult to control as its pretty fast at the moment. I finished my model with glass tissue and epoxy, mainly because that's what I had to hand and it worked very well. I 've been trying to attach some pictures but I'm getting very frustrated with photobucket!

I copied and pasted those links into the web-browser so was able to see your photos. As I said before, it's easier if you put them in an album on this site. Go into Albums in the grey bar at the top of the page above the Model Boats logo and you can add photos directly from your PC.

It's a dinky little thing isn't it. I think I'll stick to 1:12 though, that's small enough for me!

Yes it is small, I enjoyed the challenge, and I've now managed to add the pictures to an album, I'll add one of it running soon as well. I'm tempted now to try a Huntsman 28 to the same scale!

From memory they came as pre cut timber kits in 36 or 42" long and then went on to have the option of GRP hulls with the wooden superstructure and decks installed, it was a company called Precedent who did the wooden kits but I cannot remember who did the kit with the GRP hull.

Did you actually read any of this thread?
The subject is a Swordsman made to 1/24 scale from Depron. The Precedent kits were of a different prototype; to scales of 1/11 and 1/8, and not made of depron. The option of GRP hulls was also offered by Precedent and latterly Anglian Models. Production ceased a few years ago but will recommence next year under SLEC's Vintage Model Boat brand.

                          Or possibly Jotika.
