      Hi Guys

What size dead eyes do I need for 1/60 scale model ship as the one's for sale are listed in mm or ins not by scale.

Help, what is 1/60 scale I know its 60 times smaller than the full size what is it ? I have no idea,as I am dyslexia.

      Cheers,

      Hutch.

Different size ships/boats will use different size deadeyes, but all closely share the same shape. As a result, what you need to know is the correct size for your model, rather than the scale of the model. You also need to match to the size of the rigging line to make sure it will fit the holes.

            Hutch,

In this photo, I am standing next to the chains (don't ask me on which mast, because I don't remember; the photo was taken back in 2006) on HMS Victory.

            victory2006.jpg

By comparing the size of the deadeyes to the size of my noggin, I'd guestimate them to have a diameter of maybe, oh … say 12 inches or so. At scale 1:60 that would be as near as makes no difference to 5 mm.

OBVIOUSLY a tea clipper in 1860 did not necessarily use the exact same size of deadeyes as HMS Victory does today, so just the above might with very good reason still be too imprecise for your needs. If you wish to be more exact, you would either need to find out somehow what size deadeyes were used on the real Ariel back in the day, or at least find out if there were standard sizes of deadeyes at the time. The latter is, I think, not unlikely, given that such objects were made by blockmakers, who probably worked to some sort of at least tradition or common practice in the trade. Lloyd's insurance regulations might also have specified minimum sizes to be used for different types of rigs or sizes of ships, and thereby created de facto standards. Likewise, Royal Navy rules and standards may have influenced merchant practices as well.

However, if you don't want to go to lengths of research on the subject, I would suggest that you decide on what seems a realistic size, expressed in inches (as that would surely have been the measurement used), multiply those inches by 25.4 to get the corresponding full size in millimeters, divide by 60 and then round off to the nearest size in whole millimeters available. That way, you're not likely to be too far off track.

              Hi Hutch

Not a great shot of Cutty Sark's Dead Eyes taken yesterday, but not as large as HMS Victory.

We are working in the Old Naval College next door refurbishing the Painted Hall, If you need specific stuff measured let me know.cutty sark 001.jpg

                HI Hutch,

Elizabeth used Artesania Latina part 8503 dead eyes on her model of Ariel. They are nominally 4 mm diameter which would be 240 mm diameter at full scale or about 10 inches. I have attached a couple of pictures on Cutty Sark which might help you judge the size of the real item.

If you assume from the second picture that the top of the rail is about 48 inches high and then scale the deadeyes in the first picture by measuring the diameter and the distance from deck to top of rail, it makes them around 9-10 inches diameter.

As you can see, it was pretty wet the day we went round Cutty Sark.

                  HI Guys,

Thank you for the info, and photos this is a great help,as the plans I have are not very detailed.I should be able to get the dead eyes from Float a-Boat in Melbourne and other deck furniture to

Silly me I should have asked Gareth as you and Elizabeth have Ariel ! the model that is !

The last time we Heather and I were in the UK Cutty Sark was not open to the public this was before she was set on fire.

I have read the book about her, its quite impressive what has been done to display Cutty Sark.

My model is all most ready for the hull to be sealed coated ready for the deck to be glued in, and the sails are being cut out ready for sewing.I will try to post some photos.

                  Thanks again,

                  Regards,

                  Hutch.
