Hi I am making a fire boat with a working ire monitor.

I have a pump which has a working voltage from 6v to 9v. The problem I have it only has a range of about 18-24". I have seen other models with 3 monitors working they seem to have a range 3-4 feet. What am I doing wrong??

My pump is working at max volts (9v) on Nicads.

      Can any one help?/

      Many thanks Doug.

A Graupner #1951 12v pump will throw a jet of water in excess of five metres. If you are unable to increase the voltage or change the pump for a more powerful one then the only other solution is to reduce the internal diameter of the monitor to increase the pressure at the tip. Do make sure you have an in-line filter in the pump inlet tube – a model aircraft fuel filter is fine – and clean it through regularly.

Hi Dave thanks for the advice, I think try the cheaper option , reduce the size of monitor.

I have a small lathe so I will be able to make a nozzle to reduce the size.

I’ve tried this, a good cheap option.
IF it’s only used for short
bursts, like you would in the car, and you keep it below the waterline to keep it primed, and you can get one cheaply, say, from the scrap yard.
                Worked for me for years.
Best to put an in line filter in the intake, these are used in many cars too.

Doug , I bought a brand new Lucus car windscreen washer pump off Ebay for £4.50 for motor cooling ,it is self primeing so you can put it were ever you want . I have tried it with some 5mm bore pipe and it sprays the water a good 2 MTRS , but it is 12v

Thanks Andy , I think I have fixed it by make a nozzle & squeezing in the end to form flat end ,it now goes about 15 feet.

                    Thanks Doug.
