Hi there, I hope I have posted in the right place. My father made The Norske Love in the late 70s and put a sheet glass case around it (current external dimensions D46,5, H97, W123). The boat has come into my possession about 3 years ago (my father has passed away) and I now have a 7 month old baby in to banging everything so can!! The safety of the sheet glass makes me very anxious, especially as my dad made the case himself and 35+ years ago. I have had some quotes for acrylic and due to the size are over £1000. I am certainly not undervaluing a decent case but at this time I do not have that money to spend. We are moving into our first mortgaged home at the beginning of July 2014 and really want the boat to be the main feature. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I may be able to obtain a cheaper safe case? It might be that that isn't possible but fingers crossed

      thank you in advance, Emma

Have you thought of covering the glass with safety film? either having a glazing contractor fit of DIY. Lots on the internet. Model boat glass cases are rare, but fish tanks might be worth researching. Even if the finish isn't as crystal clear as the original glass the film will probably be removed at some time in the future.

            Hello Emma,

I've made large display cases for a restaurant [1:48 Bounty and 1:96 Cutty Sark]] and for that I used the plastic sheeting sold at that famous DIY shop (and is a short form for eating outside and cooking on charcoal B BQ).

The case(s) have been in place for over 12 years without damage by person, though I am to check them this year for any sun (UV) damage. One sits on a large window ledge, the other, the Cutty Sark, is high up on a wall and diners can sit beneath it and look up through the bottom as thats clear too. I did mine before the fire!!!!

I looked into the costs of display cases made by the professionals, and they can be very expensive, but it does take time to make a decent job, but the cost you quote for acrylic seems high.

I'm in the Isle of Man so no help to you, sorry.

            Hope this helps, Kimosubby

              Emma,

There are quite a few places on the internet who will give you a quote, as Kim says £1,000 seems high. If you have not already done so try Googling 'model display case'.

However, there is more than one way to approach the problem depending on how you wish to display the model. One of my models is the centrepiece of our living room and is displayed against a wall. See photo below. The sides, bottom and back of the 'case' are made of veneered chipboard which leaves only the front and top to be glazed. I had two sheets of 1/4 inch (6mm) safety glass cut to shape by a local glazier who also ground off the sharp edges. The front is held in place with the plastic tabs used to support shelves in cupboards and the top piece simply rests on the top. The same technique could be equally used with acrylic sheet instead. If you are interested in this type of approach I can send you more detailed photos. Depending on the quality of veneered sheet used it would still only cost a small fraction of the £1,000 you have been quoted and can be knocked up by anyone with the most basic of DiY skills!

Thank you all for replying. Great ideas. I have looked into the fishtank idea bit would need to get a bespoke tank and the cost would be nearly as high as the case.. My local B&Q didn't stock plastic sheeting.. And I think I am going to go with Colin's idea… Looks manageable to me (hopefully,!)- I am the daughter of a carpenter so fingers crossed..

                Thank you so very much
