        HI Guys

I have been given an Amsterdam tug, plank on frame. The hull has been laid up for some time and some of the planks have shrunk, leaving small splits in the paint of the hull.

What could you suggest to cure the problem.

I thought of very thin resin between the bulkheads and roll the hull covering the planks from the inside, hopefully the planks would absorb the resin and expand again.

Good, bad or just plain barmy!!!

        Regards

        Mark

Assuming you have decent access to the inside of the hull, my suggestion would be to first lay some fibreglass matting, or even cloth, between the bulkheads, then soak with resin. You would need to fill the cracks from the outside with some suitable filler and repaint the hull.

          Peter.

The old fashioned method is to simply submerge the hull in water for a few hours and let the planks swell up again, although not for the faint hearted as you have to carefully monitor the hull to prevent twist it is certainly a very effective method, don't forget to take the equipment out first.

Thanks for your posts, gave it a lot more thought, 'pint in hand' then a friend returned my long forgotten hand held steamer, used for cleaning etc.

Tried steaming the planks, then discovered that the varnish inside the hull was coming off as well, RESULT.

Most of the varnish came off in lumps, some areas in the hull are impossible to access, have ordered some light weight glass cloth and resin, when it arrives I will coat the areas that cant be glassed and then glass cloth the main hull inside and out.

What I thought was an easy restoration job is turning into a full re-build.

Meanwhile on with the clean-up of the superstructure. Hay ho

Thats it for now, will let you know how I get on later

                Hi everyone,

I have just got the boat Amsterdam to restore.

                I have two questions

                1. Does anyone has the plan of the tug Amsterdam please?

                2. The hull needs a good repair, to avoid water coming in.

                What do you sugget ?

                1. Sand it down
                2. Put a coat of paint which is called in french

Apprêt-mastic de finition -Blanc. 125 ml.

                3. Or put a resin.

                Thanks for replying

Hi Giles and welcome to the forum.

how bad is the hull that you want to repair! Does it have hair-line cracks or big splits or is it just old flaking paint?

A picture might help us advise. You have to create a photo album, but instructions can be found on the right hand side I think under “FAC” frequently asked questions.
