As you all know, it is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the liberation of Europe, next June. At our pond, a while ago, I was sailing my landing craft on the Sunday morning and the suggestion was made that perhaps we could ALL build a landing craft and re-enact the landings in miniature.

This suggestion was recieved very favourably and so it is our intention next year to build a fleet of assorted landing craft and have a LANDING!

We should have a fair few landing craft by next year, the only stipulation is they are approximately 1:32 or 1:35 scale, so they will all match. This is a convenient size for motorisation and also for kit tanks and soldiers to man them.

This event is ideal for our model-boating hobby, being a boating sort of event, and will be a good way to raise the model-boating profile. Events could be advertised and perhaps done in conjunction with other groups/British Legion and so on. I should think that it would warrant a few column inches in any local newspaper.

It would be nice to think that perhaps other clubs and organisations could organise their own "D-Day landings", and to this end I have created this post.. The event does not have to by anything fancy, it just needs quantities of landing craft! the more the merrier, as two landers on the pond does not an invasion make! Obviously there will be a need to make landing craft, and to this end, I have reworked my landing craft to simplify it for ease of production, and Paul T has drawn this up with his CAD tool. This is not meant to be a super scale model, but simply a starting point for anyone willing to have a go. It can be accessorised, made from thinner stuff and detailed, or simply painted Grey as per my photo. It is offered as something that will work without having to mess about. From this basic plan, any number of variants could be made, and shrunk down a bit with a different rear supertstructure, would make an LCVP or whatever.

I have used 4mm ply throughout, and the proptotype used an MFA 385 motor, coupling and cheap 2mm propshaft/40mm prop assembly ( £3.05 currently) and goes all right on a 7.2V Nimh pack. Very cheap to make and if you dont want to keep it afterwards, give it to a deserving child or indeed save them up to use at club events as boats for kids to play with on the portable pool.

In order to distribute the PDF plans– 9 sheets plus build instructions.. Paul has set up a "Just Giving" website in order to raise money for that very worthy cause ( and considering the event we are remembering) the British Legion. You simply visit this site, donate (minimum sugegsted £5) and obtain the receipt. You mail this reciept to Paul from the e-mail address you want the PDf to be sent to, and Paul will send the plans along. Easy.

        **LINK** url for just giving

model-boat-fundraising@live.co.uk the mail you use to send the reciept to PAul.

This is what the plan builds, the only "extras" (besides the Tank and soldiers) are the lifting plates on the side and the bollards at the rear.

          Dear All

          Some serious stuff

The fundraising part of this project is very simple and ALL of the money raised goes directly to the Royal British Legion.(neither Ashley or I touch the money as its all dealt with by the Just Giving website)

If you make a donation simply copy/paste the receipt to an email and send it to me at model-boat-fundraising.co.uk and I will send a set of drawings / instructions back to you.

The drawings and instructions will be emailed as a PDF which can be easily opened in Adobe Reader the drawings are all 1:1 scale and can be printed so that they can be used as templates.

Please note that I don't spend all of my time on the computer so the emailing of the drawings might take up to 12 hours.(I tend to sleep a lot these days)

I will try to answer any questions relating to the design, build or alterations to the design and if necessary create a quick drawing to help.

The instructions are easy to follow

The drawings are simple and straightforward

I'm not sure that celebration is the correct description for this project as the word belies the horror and suffering that took place on that day.

Commemoration might be a better and more respectful way to describe what we are trying to achieve

Title changed although my experience while in Normandy is that the local population do indeed regard D Day as being a cause for celebration despite the dreadful military and civilian casualties resulting from the landings and subsequent fighting.

In particular I have visited the Omaha Beach American Cemetery on several occasions and it is very moving experience.

Even more so is a small British cemetery near Bayeux where the comments in the visitors book are sufficient to reduce almost anyone to tears.

Celebrate = To observe (a day or event) with ceremonies of respect, festivity, or rejoicing.

                "Celebrities" are not necessarily required.

Colin thank you (belatedly). I dislike splitting hairs but anniversary should do the trick. Actually the initial feedback i was looking for was "gosh what a good idea i will organise something along these lines" but there we go!

I have finished the body of the TCL mk1 to carry Berengars TOG2 tank, and it looks rather good. I am especially proud of the front ramp, it has curved bits on which you will see when I post piccies.

The front door (as it were) on the LCM3 overlaps at the front;this was deliberate for the first one I made for the LAD in order to give the front strength for frontal impacts. It does look slightly better if the door is made flush with the sides, however this is a minor thing and a matter of simply applying the sander once made. I would actually advocate sticking to plan, as beaching does stress a lander somewhat. I have painted the 3rd craft now.. as I have had Grey brush in hand for the LCT1 so I have splashed paint on the 3rd LCM which is now respectable if still surplus to requirements..

Slow getting bits from Cornwall model boats..I think they have run ot of cheap 2mm shafts. The 30 inch LCT1 will have two of these, and I will see how it goes with 385 motors. I have a 12V Nimh battery and I think that this will provide more than enough power, and with twin rudders should be manoeverable enough to give a good showing at the landing craft SLALOM event. The 5 feet LCT4 will have three shafts and I think, despite the size, that three 385`s may be enough. I have found a jolly good photo of one of these craft being lifted by a crane up on to an LST, and you can see a cage around the props/rudders, and also the sloping waterline.. it is not level at all as you would have on a frigate or whatever, but slopes from the bow up to the rear. My no4 will be a flat bottomed design and it will slope naturally to the rear as the 12v SLA battery(s) and gear will be right at the stern

Still no propshaft. My LST looks a bit plain but I am at a loss as to how to "busy it up"..as there was really nothing on these craft.. I could put a few railings on the rear and a bit of rope or cable on the side…but what else?? rust?? would they be that rusty?

An interesting detail I noticed were the black boards on the front to the superstructure, These were to do with sailing allocations…it denoted what group you were with and so on, and the letters and numbers could be changed depending on what sailing orders you had. I cant rememebr now but there was a better name for them. Perhaps on our D-day event we could agree to come up with a common numbering scheme!! (Jetty landing, first wave, tanks and vehicles…or something)

The other proshaft for the LST has come and has been cut to suit and fixed in place BUT not in time for todays boating. There were more things to do to it rather than just the propshaft and so I will have to wait until two weeks time.

Why two weeks time>>?? Because Next Sunday I believe is remembrance Sunday when I shall be out if not parading for change but remembrancing and offering moral support in the crowd (if not singing to the tinny organ they bring along). I would like to hope that most people will be out next week supporting. It is most important that the tradition is continued less the event dies away in the localities and the sacrifice offered my many millions gets sidelined to a big parade in London. .

Just to go on a bit, this is one event that happens yearly and of course next year you can all take part in a D-Day themed event to a) furthering model boating as a hobby b) raising funds for the same cause c) whatever

Chatted to Trevor at the pond today with regard to his 2m Corvette and the issues thereof. We paced various ship lengths on the jetty and came to the conclusion that he is right with this model. A destroyer, which may be more historically accurate would be just too long and anything larger, well, would need its own trailer.

I am of course always open to ideas regarding this event, as we only have a vague idea of what we might do. It has to be easy and cheap(ish)..one of the reasons I have re-visited the LCM3 with an eye to cheapness of construction for those that would like to participate but not want the hassle, time and expense of building something "proper"..and lets face it, these things were simply thrown together in the first place.

Took the LCT1 out to test on the pond this afternoon, complete with TOG2 tank as the load and can report that, with a 9,6V battery on board, it goes really well. At least , it did until a prop fell off..or was it pushed?? I was actually in the side stream and may have caught some twigs up..I did a bit of reversing and so on so…

Problem here is I have used one of those cheap 2mm shaft jobs and so do not have any spare props!! I feel a small spending spree coming on.

Other than that it was nippier than expected and also reasonably stable, and needs more ballast so should be even better when this has been added. I need to get some fenders and grab ropes on the side next . Pictures were to have been taken but then it went propless so I sulked back to the car. What woth Proj no4, a bit of a disastrous outing .

Today was a better test of the LCT1 with no mishaps after pinching the prop from the small lander.

It neeeded at elast 400g of extra ballast, and there was some water in it after by the looks of things from the rudder shafts. I can extend them a bit inside so that should be ok.

Performance wise it was really good considering the puny motors. Turns were rapid and rolly, forward motion was most satisfactory but of course reverse was a bit useless considering the very fine pitch on teh props.

A bit of detailing, painting up a few more crew and that will be that until next June…

Amendment to the small LCM3 propulsive train.

I had to pinch the 40mm prop off the "easy build" prototype and replace it with a 30mm example (still as per the cheap 2mm shaft/prop package) and can report that on 7.2v the 385 motor pushes this along even better than the 40mm prop, although there is a deterioration in the already poor reversing performance. Can`t have it all. I am going to run the LST1 with TOG2 tank on 9.6 or 8.4V and so the larger props will be better for this, and the boat needs a bit more oomph being probably three times heavier than the lcm3.

A small boy tried this out today and had to hand the control back in after 3 mins, it was all just too much for him, the awesomeness of the boat. Be warned!

I have a home for the bare shell lander put together according to the printed instructions. I suggested a speed 400 or 480 will make this indecently fast, but only if you like that sort of thing..

It would be interesting to see a video of your Landing craft, heavily loaded in a heavy swell…..coming ashore and a tank emerging out of the shallows and onto the beach. With a few dramatic waterline shots?

See my thread "Surprise discovery" for possible dramatic, ship to ship, filming!

Perhaps a video of your proposed D Day extravaganza, may be the end result of your efforts, as you could edit where necessary and add dramatic sound effects etc…..Not forgetting, a few bangers going off, the residue smoke would be an added bonus!

                              Just a suggestion, old chap

Trevor came round the other night and we cut up a fair few strips of ply as the planking for his 2m Corvette.

Surprised by the flexibility of the planks…worried at the amount of planks we had to cut up!!!

By contrast the ply for my 5 foot LST3 or whatever has been cut already and there only seems to be about a dozen bits!!!

Bob .Bangers in the park…a no-no!! get arrested or even worse banned!! would be tooo risky. BUT we are thinking of what to do. I will endeavour to get someone to take pictures and video clips of the extravaganza, assuming we get a good number of vessels together.

Second plank gluing now, should be getting the third one on tonight – not too difficulf considering they are 3/4" x 6' 6" or 20mm x 2m in new money.

Hopefully the weather will be OK so that I can take it into the garden to both work on the other side and turn it round. Lack of accessability around the building board is the major problem.

Coming along but will need loads of filler, perhaps I should have practiced on a smaller boat as a first plank on frame build – oh well too late now !

One side of the hull is now planked plus 1/3 of the second side, have been using Gorilla glue and mighty impressed I am with it .

Will need filling and sanding then back into the garden for more pictures and a three point turn so that the second side can be planked.

Have added half a dozen more photos to my album showing progress to date.

Second side is coming along quickly now too.

Trevor. You are the man !! MONSTER.

Bit of a way to go yet though !!! Personally I would fibreglass up the interior before sanding the exterior to final shape so as to stop the hull flexing (the planks) as you are filling and sanding ?? when the planking has been finished of course.

All the planks are now on !

Un fortunately can not glass the interior as there is not enough access, smearing aliphatic glue from the inside is possible and keepst the planks together enough, then rubbing P38 into the joints from outside seems to hold them for a rough sanding, ready for a second coat of filler.

Next is to build up the stern with blue foam and shape it.

Stern now built up and filled, busy rubbing down and refilling big errors in the hull shape to get it somewhere close.

Hi Ashley I have subscribed to the fund raising and would like to build the landing craft but only have a Notebook so cannot download the plans

.Good photos make it easy but not sure of maximum width and length so a PM with the dimentions would help . As a show of goodwill maybe I could come down south from the wilds of Lincolnshire to support your display . Just been given a Chieften Tank which may not be used 70 years ago

So more advise please Thanks Michaelwink
