hello all , Im new to the forum and my name is steve. I have built a few boats in the last 2 years and my latest boat is a1/24 scale fairmile d. This is the biggest model I have ever attempted. I started on it in february and have just finished. I used a kingston mouldings hull, which was exellent, and fittings from battlecrafts , the rest I found on ebay or made myself. She has 4 sound units ,all working lights, a smoke screen, all the guns rotate and the best bit, working depth charges. I built this mtb for a good freind of mine who Is dedicating it to the memory of his freind who served on mtb 637 in the medditerainian

Hello Ashley, yes , working depth charges! they are fired from the boat using E matches, a small electricly ignited bulb. The maiden voyage is in a couple of weeks ,or as soon as the transport case is finished. I have lots of photos of the build if you or anyone else is interested

Some photos of the build of my fairmile. Whole project seemed quite daunting when I saw how many bits and pieces Id bought , A few setbacks and some dodgy wiring killed a couple of esc and some electronic components. I tried to make a smoke generator using a diesel glow plug and mineral oil with some success ,but it ran very very hot, too hot to go inside the boat, so I found some smoke pellets that are used for chimney testing ,these are ignited with an electric fuse connected to a micro switch. the motors are 4 johnson 600 and the throttle is mixed in with the rudder control to give better turning because the boat has tiny rudders. electrical connectors are wago snaplocks ,no more chocblox for me. the deck is planked using 10mm x1.5mm mahogany strip which looked fantastic when id done it , didnt realy want to paint it .she s finished now and im building a transport case to get her to the lake without breaking bits off of her, maybe I should build the next boat a bit smaller!!

Steve H. Say hello next time!! Sunday is the day. Make sure you debut your machine on a Sunday morning, sharpish as the car park fills up quick if its a nice day. Anytime before about 10 and after that you may have to park at the far end, but you probably know this already ( just telling you so all the others might make the effort).

Ashley. P.S Will bring Toyboata along….just in case!!

HI, Ashley, dont know what happened to the photos I posted, I have put them in my album, also there are some pics of my powerboat and the tug I scratch built to rescue it , she s called "dirty betty" and is loosely based on a springer tug, Betty took 3 weeks to build out of 6mm ply and scrap skirting board taken from a skip in kensington,

Steve. Sometimes the pictures get messed up if not spaced properly? Had a look at your album. Nice springer. Most people go for the clean and/or novelty look. Are the "bilge keels" a permanent attachment..and are they a feature of normal springers or did you find them neccessary?

Rudders on MTB`s or whatever.. they always look very small to me, even on the real thing. However, if the rudder is the same size (diameter=rudder depth) then most of the prop thrust will act on the rudder and give adequate steering I suppose?

Steve, I have tried to tidy up your post but there seems to be some strange embedded formatting which I can't remove!

If you are doing a cut and paste from another program it's best to make it simple text

When posting photos, follow the guidelines in the FAQ section. It's possible that you tried to include too many photos in the post. This site works best if you simply put in one or two (separated by at least one space) and then a link to the album.

Thanks for the tips on the photo postings, will have another go soon. The keels on the springer were an idea i got from watching a real tug pulling a cargo ship, I think they are designed to stop the tug from being pulled sideways and to give it more purchase in the water. And no I dont think springers have them, a bit of artistic licence on my part, along with the captain knocking back a bottle of booze in the cabin. They make a pretty good built in stand though, and she turns almost on herself. The fairmile is going on display next saturday at a help for heroes fundraiser at a local social club , along with some ww2 bikes and maybe a jeep. sunday I will hopefully sail the tug and speedboat at bushy park, then the fairmile gets her feet wet the following sunday, as the transport case finished . Steve.
