I'm thinking of building the rorqual mm918 designed by vic smeed in 1967, apparently it was never built at the time, has anyone built one or know of one being done, this is my first boat build, do like to bite off more than I can chew, I'm a carpenter so woodwork is no prob, any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

          James,

The Rorqual article appeared in the January 1967 issue of Model Boats and republished in the Commemorative Special issue in 2010.

I assume you have this article in which case the build should be pretty straightforward as the plan seems to be pretty clear as to the method of construction.

I built the Rorqual way back in 1974 when I was 15, it was one of my first Vic Smeed builds and it went very well.

                  Hi James

It was a 10cc glow engine, it went very fast and handled like a dream. This wont help though as petrol engines are frowned upon these days.

Not frowned on by me, was lookin at a 26cc motor on eBay what you think if I scale up on drawings

Paul means frowned upon in the sense that there are not many ponds/lakes where the running of i/c boats are permitted these days.

Scaling up would work but 26cc is quite a big engine and from experience I suspect that you would need a 6 to 8ft hull to accommodate it.

As Colin says there are very few boating lakes that permit petrol engines but if you intend to build a larger model then you could always sail on canals or rivers.

Thank you for advice, I think I'll start at the beginning, totally new to all this, will look into different types of engine, never knew there were other engines, obviously got a lot to learn, maybe I should go to novice page and start there, thanks again I'll keep you all posted on how it goes

What used to be BWB (British Waterways) would allow electric driven models to sail on their canals, Paul, when I enquired some years ago, without objection, but specifically stated that under no circumstances would they allow ICE engines as they were too noisey and dangerous because of the inflamable fuel carried, for those residing on their moored boats.

                              Slightly off topic…

I once saw a chap bailing out his cabin cruiser

He had a bucket and went through a bailing motion, but there was nothing being bailed?…..eh?

Oh yes there was!…..His boat was full of Calor Gas!

                                Hello Neil

I had the same conversation with the Bridgewater canal company and provided I had adequate insurance and obeyed the rules of the canal they were happy for me to sail my larger models.

They treated my models as small full size boats so I even have a licence.
