I have been sorting out a boat that was my Dads and i inherited about 10 years ago. (MFA Fantome) the assembly has gone well considering I am new to building boats.

My boat must really hate me as i have been Thwarted with it yet again, 1st the mechanical speed controller I was going to use gave up the ghost and fell apart.

2nd time actually made it to the lake, got the boat in the water and after about 1 second of motor run i lost everything, but luck was on my side as it got blown back to the bank, turns out a wire was loose on the drive battery and fell off.

Why does my boat hate me so much?

Pete. It is simply telling you something.

          a) dont use mechanical controllers, get a nice electronic one

          b) check everything twice before sailing !!

I have a Fantome. Great boat. What motor(s) are you using? and are you going to get some Pippa dolls for it?

That sounds like a typical days sailing for the budding Tyro, to me, Pete!

The lesson to be learned there is……Try it in the bath first?

Thanks both, Ashley it has an 800 size motor in it on a 50 mm prop, 4mm short shaft (8 inches or so)

the mechanical controller was so I had reverse but settled for a jeti 25 amp esc with froward only.

It has been checked in the bath several times Bob but only just fits!

i even had it running this morning before i took it out and all was fine (or so I thougt).

I thought boating would be less hassle than flying but I guess i will get there.

As for the dolls not sure yet as it still isn't finished as i thought it could do with some seafaring tests first.

Got to laugh though as i had been nagging the wife for hours before i took the boat out.

              Regards Pete.

My Fantome has two 800`s so I think yours will be a bit sluggish in the water. Fit an 850 motor, straight swap, and this should restore performance a bit.

Thanks Ashley, this is the mk1 version with single prop,

I don't mind sluggish it just would be nice to get it in the water and running.

                  Pete.

Pete. The "mark 1" was designed to fit their i/c "fox" engine, hence only one shaft.

The twin shaft setup was opted for with the advent of electric power. As I say. fitting an MFA 850 will be a straight swap , unless you have the EARLIER "Marlin" 800 type.. this was a bit thinner and has a different motor shaft size.

I have tried mine on the sea, great fun and a hull well able to cope with decent sized waves and swell.

this one came with a good old merco 61.

i will be upgrading as i go along but for now i am happy just to see it going.

And i must say it weather cocks nicely when there is no power and the wind is strong, I did choose the side of the lake that meant if anything went wrong it would hopefully make it to the bank without too much worrying on my behalf.

The bug has well and truly bitten though, And looking for more boats/yachtsh

Thanks for the advice and will probably go with a bigger motor as i get used too her.

                      Pete
