I have just acquired from EBay a 48" Lloydsman Tug for refurbishment. Has anybody made one? What motor/prop did you use? The model comes with a 6V Hectaperm motor and plastic prop. Suggestions from Mobile Marine Models and The Prop Shop err towards the MMM 24V motor and 75mm prop. The propshaft is solidly fibreglassed in and not easily accesible for upgrading from M4 to M5. I am not after max pulling power for competition work etc but would like good performance around the pond. If possible I would like to stick to the M4 shaft and MMM T12 motor or the Hectaperm. Any thoughts, ideas or experiences greatly received!

Hi John While I have no knowledge of that particular model, I do have a large tug,

          IMG_1012 (Small).JPG

          nearly 1.5 meter long 70lb displacment .

It runs quit well, the prop is a homemade 4 blade 90mm prop,

made to look scale for the model, and tweaked on the pitch to give

best results. The motor is 12V and on full power draws just over 10A,

it is a motor used in modelling for starting IC engines connected

directly to the shaft which is 2BA Hope this gives you some help

          Tom

ps more photos in my album

            Hello John

I am currently building the Lloydsman, working on the superstructure has proved difficult with the rounded forward areas and so many windows, much easier on the ports.

I have installed M5 shaft and trying a brushless motor, the slowest I could find and would have like to put in a gear down but could not find a good one.

              Hello again John

              Sorry sent before I finished.

I have not been able to find many good photographs and the plans are somewhat lacking in detail especially looking forward. Have you any good photographs?

I have put progress photographs in my Albums on this website.

              Ralph

Hello John – hope you are well!
My 43" Envoy had a prop that big and used a geared MFA Torpedo 500 (6:1) running on 12v. If you want a bit more power then there's the MFA800 with belt-drive. Both are available from Component Shop (although the 800 isn't yet on their website). http://mfacomodrills.com/gearboxes/960d_series.html

…………….. The propshaft is solidly fibreglassed in and not easily accesible for upgrading from M4 to M5……………

Depending on the propshaft tube, it should be possible to knock out the M4 bearings from each end using a metal rod, and substitute M5 ones (or redrill the originals), if you would prefer to use an M5 prop. I would expect that the tube clearance would be ok….

                    HI John

I used the MMM 24volt motor in my Amsterdam, (about the same size) this with a propshop prop does the real job with an Electronize ESC, twin 12ah batteries, heavy but great balast, dont know the run time, never stayed more than 6 hours at a club do to find out

                    Hope this helps your disision

                    Mark
