Firstly, I did sail the Titanic this morning, despite the freezing cold wind (for realism) and the somewhat oversize waves on the sea. The swans were doing their best to imitate "the iceberg" but alas were too manouverable to let me bump into one.
Paul, couldnt agree more, but its the same thing today, the sinking of the Concordia will be bound to bring more regulations along. If I remember reading correctly, Harland and Wolff wanted to fit many more lifeboats on the Titanic, but they were over ruled by the board of White Star line as the extra lifeboats (above that required by law) cluttered the look of the ship. Not that of course the extras would have been enough anyway. but the more the merrier.
Did you see the telly program on the other night "why ships sink" (or something similar). Made uneasy viewing !
It is a good job the water was not freezing cold and the Concordia was not offshore a bit more, as only half the lifeboats could have been launched.. would have made the loss of the Titanic very small game in comparison!! 6,000 bods on one ship!! blow that for a lark.
Although some things have come along over the years, for instance the lifeboat for the bridge crew is now apparently much more accessable…
