I just took delivery of this kit from Model slipway. In the Model Boats mag it was described as big but I was surprised at just how tall she is compared to length, no wonder she requires so much ballast. Has anyone who has built one before got any advice for me before I start on the build. I will, of course, be spending quite a bit of time studying the plans etc before the first cut.

      Thanks in advance

      Les

          Snap! Les,

I've also just bought the Kit for "Our Lass", Same as you have been reading the MB review fro 2010 mag and also been giving the instructions and plans a coat of looking at.

This is my 4th kit from Model Slipway and they are such good kits I've decided to have this other one, I started with the 10 hatch coaster, then the Wyeforce tug and last one was the "Aziz" which a won our clubs best build trophy last year.

Just have to put the finishing touches to the Narra Boat from Riverside models, that's my present project and then I will be there with you building this great looking model.

              Hi Pete (?)

We have a lot in common, my first boat was the 4 hatch coaster followed by the Assurance tug both of which look superb on the water. Sadly no prizes in our club for a best build (which, of course I would have won -Ha! Sadly I am a real beginner compared to some at the club so I am just happy it floats!!)

Last week we had my tug along with the Envoy tug together on the lake and they really looked good. I have just finished the Sea Commander which looks great but turns flat at speed so does not look right yet not overballasted as no ballast needed.

Bob, don't know how to attach photos, not the same as e-mail which says 'attachments'

                Hello Les

Posting pictures is a bit tricky at first, but is soon mastered!

Go to FAQ at the bottom and try it!

                  Hi Les

Check out my Blog for pictures of my other Model Slipway boats

                  http://petesboats.blogspot.co.uk/

There are also some video's on YouTube, just search for "Etherow" on there and you can see them in action.

Hope you haven't got too far on front of me?

I've been though the instruction book and highlighted items mention in the MB review so it will be there to remind me later.

                    Hi Peter,

A word of warning if you have not already found out. The templates for the rudder etc are not very accurate. I have checked the measurements given against the plan and they are different, eg the distance from the stern to the end of the keel is 135mm on the plan and only 130mm on the boat. This affects where you drill the holes for the rudder and corts nozzle. I have decided to wait until I have temporarily fitted the skeg and then drill the holes after further measuring but so far I think the 50mm will be 45 and the 83 will be 78. However I will not say that is 100% until the skeg is fitted and I can use rudder and nozzle for proper alignment. If you want to keep in touch during building and swap warning/helpful notes my e-mail is lcrane1946@btinternet.com

                    regards

                    Les

                      Hi Les,

Not even started the build yet, but will have a look in the morning at the measurements you mention, have put your e-mail address in my contacts list so I can keep in touch with you.

Why not phone Laurie White at Model Slipway, I'm sure he will be able to put you right, he always says ring if you have any problems!

Have finally re-measured, drilled, fitted and epoxied the skeg, korz nozzle and rudder. Involved a lot of fitting with tape and checking before drilling but am glad I did not rely on the templates provided. End product looks OK. However, have not been able to fit bow thruster as has not been deliverd despite being ordered and paid for when collected the model weeks ago. Have had several contradictory explanations from the model shop involved, last week it had been posted and they were surprised it had not arrived, today they have not yet had them in and will send it as soon as poss – am not impressed.

Hi Les, watching your trials and tribulations with the rear of your build.

I'm lucky in that I had a drive over to Burnley from my home town of Manchester and picked up all the extra's I needed with the kit from Jackie, ie bow thruster, brass prop and motor etc, it was also nice to have a chat with the Master Laurie, on all things boating with Model Slipway, and a good cup of Yorkshire tea as well.

Hope the rest of your build goes a bit easier, I'm sure that Laurie would be only too happy to put you straight on anything else you come across that's iffy!.

Will be following your efforts and picking up on your build.

Ps nearly finished my present project see attachment, so will soon be following you building my boat.

There is some progress! Bow thruster arrived but not until I was asked to ring up and pay (I did this when I purchased the model so was non too pleased!!). Anyway all ended well and it duly arrived and has been fitted, as has the motor and the rudder servo. Have cut out the rear openings and am now fitting the deck supports but in the cold temps the epoxy is taking hours to set rather than 30 mins so progress there has been slow. Must take a few photos and post them although they will not be exciting, just give a scale to things

Hi Leslie, how is the build going?, not heard from you in a while.

How did you go on fitted the deck supports round the front of the hull as it's at a downwards angle and fitting the deck supports will make it worse it would seem, I thought of leaving it a bit proud at the front and filing it level when hardened off??

Did you see my video of our Jubilee event and Bob Abell's Great eastern I video'd for him?

Ah, there is areason. Firstly I have been helping a friend sort out a boat that he has had problems with and secondly been away for a month. Not much progress, tho I have glued the first set of deck supports around the hull. My experience with Model Slipway boats is that your approach is the right way, slightly proud and trim. I had to do that with the 4 hatch coaster and the Assurance tug where the deck is sloping and curved. Laborious but it works and provides a wide contact for the deck. Have been trying to work out where all the elecs will go as have bow thruster and hope to put full lights on mast etc so several batteries and 2 ESCs. Also bought a radio control aeroplane and have been playing with that although I have a lot to learn as it is much harder to master and I have yet to land it under proper control – good job there is a field with very tall grass near me to soften the blows!!

HI Leslie, have you got any pictures of the latest stage of your build on the OL2 ?

I'm getting on with mine, but not in the sequence listed in the manual, just as the mood takes me.

Running gear, bow thruster and rudder servo in, now doing a bit on the net drums and studying the detailing article on the Model Slipway Website, fancy doing a bit of that detailing in the drum deck area, before closing it off with the top deck, which would be difficult then.

Latest on the build after a short break. Have sorted out where electrics are to go, using 2x12v sla batteries for most and a 7.2 nimh for the bow thruster. A 6v pack will follow for the lights. Have used a big electronize esc for motors and rudder and a 15amp mtronics for the thruster. All works so far!!. As not much room to play around when deck is on (huge space, difficult access) decided to ballast at this stage. Added lots of lead after batteries but still a good inch to inch and a half from plimsol line. Have been cutting more lead from the roll and need to get it back in the bath again. Think it would be 10 times more difficult if deck had been on. Will make it all removeable. Decks done but not fitted yet. Not taken many photos but will add what I have got to my boats list. Been playing around with r/c model plane so been a little tardy with boat!

Nice to see you back, I've been getting on with my build as well, see my idea for weights and battery boxes in the pictures.

Didn't fancy filling 4pt milk bottles at our lake as it's full of duck poo and other nasties, Son John of the Maggie "M" build on this forum, gave me a stack of weights and as you will see they are from the bottom of vertical blinds.

Will package them up into bundles, as in the above picture on the left and add them at the lake.

Three of those brown taped bundles weight 5lb, so three in each side, there is also a compartment at the front for some more weigh that can stay in there perminantly

                                          Thanks for that info Bob.

Looking out for a plasterer's mixing bath at 165lts, they have them for sale at "The Tool Station" I believe, someone mentioned it for ballasting tests and saves running up and down the stairs to the bath I haven't got anyway.

Plonk it on your front lawn, cover it with a large plastic sheet and just add water!

Your battery boxes look class! mine are shoddy by comparison. Have now cut and folded lots of lead so will be having another try at ballasting later. I do have a downstairs bathroom so it is relatively easy to get all bits into it but I do like the idea of a frame and groundsheet – now that the hosepipe ban has ended.

Hi all, been a long time since I added anything but have not been able to build due to achillies injury and not able to get around much. However, whilst still got injury have now managed to sort out space in the workshop to sit. Have started the cabin which fits in the main but the curved front is not wide enough by about 1/8th inch at the top so some infill will be required. I could have trimmed the internal roof support but not sure what knock on effect that would have. Fits ok at the base as it just fits around the coaming nicely. Managed to make and paint the gantry which looks good.
