Neil, Yes, the little severn when converted digs its bottom in when subject to excessive power . These lifeboats of course are not proper planing craft and thus would tend to dig in a bit. A transom flap helps to GO FASTER.  Great picture by the way

sorry ashley, but that’s a Waveney class lifeboat, but i know what you mean.

in fact when the waveneys were first designed for the US coast guard, they didn’t work at all because they stuck their bums down so much they didn’t go anywhere…..

.not until a chap came along and put a skeg on the side of the boat at the rear end… port and starboard……..a rather ugly looking thing…….but it did the trick, and the waveney, or 44 foot class as the yanks used to call them, got herself to semi plane…..but they never had trim tabs fitted,,,,,,maybe they’d have gone faster if they had………., but as a boat they rolled in a swell magnificently, lol

Neil. Misunderstanding here… was talking about the little RTR Severn and not the picture, which I do recognise to be a Waveney, wasnt clear.

I suppose that speed, seakeeping and also prop protection and possible grounding considerations do not sit that well together when it comes  to designing a hull!  The RTR goes much better when the bottom has been trimmed of such devices and filled  not to mention “speed” flaps fitted.

I often think that manufacturers could offer a choice of two hulls; one for display and one for r/c use. This second could be a bit deeper and fuller or something, so as to aid stability and allow better placements of kit/lowering c of g etc etc.

Ah now I am looking forward to a master class in lifeboat recognition.

The current lifeboat fleet was covered in the 2009 Winter Naval and Lifeboat Special issue by (ahem|!) me.

and a good job you made of it too, Colin………

your next task is a retrospective look at all the old double ender classic lifeboats that have gone but not forgotten……….now that would be something i’d love to see in print…..just my sort of boat…….need any help?

I know they are dark blue with a smashing orangy bit on top, but after that it gets a bit hazy.

Yes Ashley, probably means you’ve been in the water too long. But don’t worry, once you’ve been hauled aboard they’ll give you a nice cup of cocoa!
