hello modellers i have just built 48″ ply tug and have fitted large 4″ 4blade brass prop and have been offered car cooling fan ,which i have been told would be ideal for low speed and torque?anyone know any info .i need to know what ah -12volt battery to get? hope some one has this setup,i want to use electonize30amp esc.

Mark.  4 inches is a mighty big prop, and of a size more like the air fan on your ford motor…
these motors vary considerably in power etc, and to be honest I rather think that this motor will be seriously strained by a prop of that size, unless seriously geared down. i am not a tuggy and dont really know what size a big prop would be on a 48 inch tug but i am betting its more like 60 or 70mm (so well under three inches) and possibly your fan motor might just be ok. BUT you would need to check the current draw.

As big a battery as you can fit is always a good idea, but a normal 12v 7Ahr gel type should do.

I used to have an Anglia 107E windscreen wiper motor on a 39″ trawler type hull turning a 40mm prop, and that went ok (i ran it on 12 or 18v by switching batteries)
gosh the innocence of youth (it was a long time ago)

            Hi Mark.
I had an unused slightly bigger 4″ diameter Peugot fan motor which I gave to a friend for a 10 foot TID tug,no less.
Based on quite a few models I have seen,I think that Ford motor will be ok for the 4″ prop.
The only things at issue are the coupling and suppression

I had a 4ft displacement 1/12 scale fishing boat with a 4″ 4 blade and a car fan motor ran it a treat , no problems Regards Andy

Thanks you for the replys the motor draws 3amps in water flat out ,the battery i have is 12v 4.5ah,but i intend on fitting 2x 12v 7ah.the reason i fitted large kort and prop is i see a tug a few years ago at a portsmouth model show and it worked well,my tug needs a lot more balllast to bring down to water line.

Well I sit corrected, but 36 watts doesnt strike me as much power for a prop that size?? or are there other forces at work here…

3 amps is a very modest draw though and two 7Ahr batteries will give you  almost a whole day on the pond!!!

A big prop with a fine pitch equals a small prop with a coarse pitch……. I think?

I think what you say is correct but the most important factor is rpm at the shaft , i think power wise the bigger the surface area of the blades the better to a point hence cruisers and such tend to have smaller props than a small trawler of the same size , the trawler would need a bigger prop and blade area to generate the power at lower rpm

                                             Regards Andy

Apart from shaft torque( τ ),the only other factor or “force at work” in the motor output power (P) is the rotational speed ω     ………..P = ω.τ
The rotational speed happens to be very low in some car fan motors. You can take a guess using a pencil!

ashley ill settle for half day ,my multimeter may be on the way out retested and now shows 2amps slow and 8amps on full out.i need  two batterys as im having trouble getting lead flashing to use as ballast, might look out for some small duff batterys, that might help,as she needs to go down 2.5 inchs to waterline.with just 2 x7ah batterys the kort nozzle is just under surface.what do other people do?

You could add more batteries , this would also give you extended running time , i would add good batteries and if you can place them in such a way that they can be removed / installed  at the waterside therefore cutting down on the weight you have to carry around

                            Regards Andy

Hi Mark    My tug is similar size to yours, and I use a small car battery,   With a 4″ 4 bladed prop, on 12v I draw almost 10a to give a good speed. I am useing a 12v starter motor as used by the IC modellers, direct coupled (no gearbox) .   There are photos on this site http://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_photo.asp?a=380&p=120241
                              Cheers Tom
