I attended the Model Boat Convention on Saturday 29th August but was disappointed not to find any model sailing ships displayed. Even more disappointing was the fact that there were no traders selling materials for this section of modelling. I notice, too, that the majority of topics on your web site is more to do with RC model boats etc. Am I missing something or on the wrong site? Maybe, as a beginner, I am not reading the signs right…

Does anyone know of a model shop within, say, 10 miles of Warrington who sell wooden sailing ship model supplies?

Harry, Bob Wilson regularly posts on here with his inspirational minature models, often of sailing ships amongst other fine works of modelling
He also points out when and where the North West model shipwrightsmeet, and i am sure they and he would love to help and see you at a meet to swell the ranks.
As you point out, there is a pleathora of r/c modellers, but we are a friendly bunch, and I’m sure you will be able to find the help you need, if you ask the questions you want.
          Neil.

The traders at the shows usually only bring their best selling lines. It’s not always very practical to take supplies of wood etc. When I visited some of the traders for articles in the magazine I found that several of them have very extensive selections of timber, JOTika and Euromodels for example. Shops such as Westbourne Models in Bournemouth also carry a good stock for despatch by mail order.

You don’t say what sort of wooden sailing ships you are interested in – working, static showcase, Thames Barges etc – there are various different types and some of them have specialst clubs and associations such as the Association of Model Barge Owners and the Vintage Model Yacht Group.

As Neil says, tell us a bit more about your specific interests and the materials you require and maybe we can help point you in the right direction.

Thanks, Colin and Neil. My area of interest is in the Nelson era. Being a C.S. Forester, (Hornblower), fan, I’ve always been interested in the early navy. I’m ok re model supplies, I use Squires Model  & Craft Tools. The reason for my moan is that it would have been nice to spend a few bob on bits and  pieces ‘in the flesh’ as you might say, and see how other ship modellers tackle this area of build. I was also hoping to take a few photographs to enlighten some of the mysteries of the rigging.

              Thanks again for your interest

I live within 10 miles of Warrington and can confirm that there are no such model shops, I get my advice in this area of model building from Model Boat mag (there is a great series running at the moment)
