I’m working on a “club boat” style tug for steering competitions and plan if possible to fit a dynamic kort nozzle hopefully to get the max manouvreability. From my bits box I have what I feel is usable cv joint that will allow me to mount the prop in the nozzle and turn the whole kit and caboodle. my question is will 42degrees deflection either side of centre be adequate or is it back to the drawing board????

Look at this link http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/My_models/31%20Dickie_4.htm this design will solve your problem.

Do you intend to turn the prop with the nozzle?

For maximum steering ability try fitting a pair of schottel drives.

            Hi Phil

Some time ago I modified my tug’s existing barndoor rudder because it wouldn’t steer in reverse.

I fitted an extension to the propshaft to put the prop in line with the rudder pivot point, and fitted a cut down paint tin as a kort, just to try it.  The result was so good I left it. I fitted the nozzle about a third of its length in front of the prop.

I think trying to turn the prop with the nozzle could give many problems with propshaft bearings to hold the prop.

The nozzle moves about 35deg from centre

              Cheers Tom

thanks for that link Paul excellent idea yes I’ve solved the turning the prop with the nozzle issue (a cv joint and drive shaft from a model car) and you’ve helped a lot telstar if 35degrees gives you good results then 42 + a becker rudder shuold have mine going sideways I hope

Just a quick piccy so you can see what I’ve used to articulate the prop shaft at the nozzle a Becker rudder will hopefully be added shortly

the ali tube is simply acting as a dummy propshaft for alignment purposes
