      Hi all,
i have just completed a 1/200 scale model of the Yamato warship. Now my problem is the rudder seems to be inadiquate for the model as it needs quite alot of room to turn. It runs on one 540 type motor which drives 4 props. I have heard that if i use 4 motors i can use something called a mixer unit which will take away the need for 4 seperate speed controllers. instead i can use only one and the mixer unit will automatically sense that the boat is turning and adjust the speed of the props ie if i turn to the left then it will speed up the right hand props and slow the left ones making turning sharper. Does anyone know where to buy these units ie websites etc. Any help will be great as i have now started to build the HMS Manxman an abdiel class mine layer from deans marine and dont want the same problems with this one. Many thanks.

H-J, Interestingly enough there was a just a very informative and technical post concerning rudders not so long ago. If your rudder is truly to scale i should think it is simply too small, and needs to be bigger, it may be the boat is actually turning to a scale radius, that is unfortunately not so useful in a modelling environment. Perhaps since you  have built the ship, fitting a slightly larger rudder may be a better solution than fitting loads more motors and a mixer unit to control them. As to the Manxman, here must be loads of Manxman builders out there to advise as to if you need to go to the same complexity or not. Ashley

            scott,
do you have both rudders working or just the most aft of the two.
the smaller for’d rudder apparently does make a difference in the turn circle if made to operate.

Have a look at this link.http://www.action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/Twins%20Ver2.pdf  and all should become much clearer.
You can’t mix only one motor – it’s like trying to clap with only one hand. Depending on the size of this model you might fit either two or four motors, controlling the port and starboard motor(s) using the mixer. You certainly won’t need four speed controllers!
I have a customer who has successfully built a Deans’ Manxman with all sorts of gizmos fitted, including this mixer unit. Have a look under Wiring Diagrams on the same website; his name is Ivor Grant.
              Food for thought?

Hi neil sadly i only have the larger rudder working as i thought the smaller one was just too small to make any difference, it also sits behind the props

                  Hi Dave,
i had a look at the website and saw the perfect solution for my manxman, its the P94 dual esc and mixer. as for the yamato i think i will lengthen the existing rudder so that when turned it will catch the wash of both props and see if that will make a difference.  Does this customer have a link to any photos of his manxman? and maybe have any advice on the build as i have only just started and already encountered a few problems.

As the proud owner of P94 number 1, I can tell you it is an amazing piece of kit. Don’t hesitate, just buy one……..
