      Hi All
Just bought a new Graupner Speed 700Turbo for my replica of Slo-Mo-Shun.
Any tips for running it in?
I’ll be running it on  12V.  Gentle throttle openings for a while or full blast from the beginning?

Full blast gets me all the timee !!!    seriously….dont know. I cant imagine a bog standard sort of motor like you have is going to need running in.. I did hear a tale that in days of yore, the racing fraternity used to run their motors in UNDER WATER !…can anyone vouch for thgis or is it urban myth???   Ashley

            Thanks Ashley
I’ve always wondered why people who don’t know the answer bother answering?

Pierre, I will take that as a compliment ??
              a) I dont know why  either,
              b) it racks up my post count, and
              c) thats because sometimes there  is no one out there who knows or can be bothered to post, besides, an outrageous answer to a question sometimes goads bods into replying !!!
d)If NO ONE answers your new post you would feel rejected and humiliated for posting such a boring post that no one would answer,

I have never read of anyone running in an electric motor, unless it is a racing very high performance type. I just cant imagine there will be any noticeable difference to a standard motor if you thrash it from the off, or take it easy for a while. Lets face it, are you going to see the difference with a “well run in Graupner 600 turbo”, or a thrashed from the box motor??        (that will get the posts)    Ashley

To get the best out of motor it is best to run then in , when motors are new the brushes are not bedded in to the comm so if you try to pass a large curent through them they will spark, this can then burn the comm, and you will have problems even when they are bedded in passing high current, the way to get over this is to run it in on 2-4 volts nice and slow i would tape my race motots to my lathe bed as a heat sink, and let it run for about 12/ 24 hours depending on how hard the brushes are.

with a 700bb you can clean the com with cotton buds and somecomm cleaner, we did use trike but it’s not good for your health, you can also use IPA. dont forget to oil the bearings, do not use WD40 as it will burn on to the comm and stop you being able to pass large currents  running a new motor flat out from new just burns comms.

Hey Ashley. The above sounds like a good reason for changing to brushless motors.
                    David.

Pierre. There we are , from a man who knows!! all you have to do is take it easy for 10 hours or so and give the bits a good clean!  David, yes, brushless is the way for high power.  Ashley

Running a motor in water is not a good idea when we did standard class 12th cars they did that for a bit the problem was that any more than ten seconds and you had no brushes left , it was at the time when all cans where sealed and you could not get at the brush gear, the problem arose when a few shops started selling water dipped motors and they did not clean them out after, they ended up with a lot of rusty motors, at the time I was one of the people that opened and de wound the first 3 motors at an event so I saw what state they where in , another tweak was to give them a bit more advance by putting in a long motor screw till it locked the comm. then give the pinion at twist, this moved the comm. a few degrees and gave it some more advance, the type of motor changed about this time and brushes where accessible and we had a tool that we could check for illegal advancing without striping the motor

                            I know the answer………..stick a 10cc engine in.

On a serious note what do Graupner advise?

                              Hi Ashley
OK, your answers a to d make perfect sense

Thanks to HS93 – I vaguely remember reading this somewhere, but couldn’t remeber the details – hence the post. As even bog standard motors cost a fortune here in SA its worth getting every bit of use out of them!
                               Cheers – Pierre
