How about a model of this when you have finished the barrel back Paul. You like things that go fast.
2000hp,112 kph top speed and 900 litres per hour when going flat out.
It is just a shame that it was built for the purpose of drug running.

David. Like it, its not very discreet though, is it?   easy way of building a fast boat I suppose, just strapping loads of engines on the back !   Ashley

A Flying Boat may have been a better option?…………………But not an Ashley type!

I often wonder these drug runners dont try to make a stealth type boat, as most of the open ocean surveillance is carried out with radar..    lets face it, even the smallest helicopter has the legs off a fast boat. Perhaps its a redundancy type thing, you know, when the marines sniper is trying to disable the engines by shooting at them from a heli….Ashley

Saw this picture in a mag recently – pity to think it was developed for drug running!

Ashley this is just about as much a stealth boat as you can get – low profile, rubber sponsons providing no radar reflection, wooden cabin and level of engines below the rubber. Presumably used at night where a helicopter would have to use radar to detect it.

I used to be a police reservist with the waterwing, where the chief task was trying to trap crayfish poachers off Robben Island. Their boats weren’t as sophisticated as the picture,, they could only  do 40 knots and ours could do 30!  Radar was useless at sealevel (height above water about 6 feet) We tried the sophisticated radar in Port Control and lost the boats in the sea clutter – the poachers would only operate in windy, choppy conditions.  We tried helicopters but at the first sound of the heli, the poachers would run for shore and their echoes would be lost  in the shore echoes.
The only (low-tech) solution was to monitor the landing sites – also limited success, lots of sites, too few men!

American law enforcement officers faced the same problem during prohibition they were issued with fast launches fitted with a single petrol engine so the rum runners went to the same manufacturer and ordered similar types of launches but with twin engines so that they could outrun the police boats.

It’s amazing how history repeats itself.

Pierre, very good point there.. but I suspect the I.R signature of that lot might be telling..?
The next missile system to arm the RN Lynx helicopters is actually going to be TWO systems, one about the same size at the current Sea Skua, but with an imaging seeker, and the other is a much smaller weapon with a laser fuse, and this fuse has been developed to be triggered by soft squidgy targets just like rubber boats, as conventional weapons just pass through before exploding. Hi Ashley
Imagining systems would be pretty neat for night time use!
I’m not sure how the system worksin the UK, who is responsible for apprehending drug runners _Airforce, Navy, CoastGaurd, Customs and Excise?  Would they be equipped with all this latest technology?
As for the missile system ,surely you jest?  Drugrunners, reprehensible as they are, are still civilians in peace time. You’re not suggesting lasers and rockets be used against them?
Going way off topic here, still a topic that interests me!

A missile would be too quick and humane for the ba…….ds.
