I'm about to start painting (airbrushing) an ABS model (Dolly Harbour Launch from RO-Marin) using Humbrol enamels, and I intend to finish it off with a coat of Ronseal satin varnish to protect the vinyl lettering and trimlines. The enamel colours I'm using are only available in matt and gloss but I want a satin finish – should I use matt or gloss enamels under the varnish, or doesn't it matter and maybe I should stop thinking about this so much?

      TIA

          Hi Ian,

The underlying finish probably doesn't matter too much as long as you get a nice smooth result.

Obviously the varnish needs to be the traditional solvent based polyurethane variety and not the quickdry stuff.

That said, I have found that the matt variety gives a slight sheen which I personally find preferable to the satin finish.

The interior variety is fine as it doesn't contain the UV filters which can give a yellowish tint.

I assume you are looking at Ronseal Mattcoat.

but I have also found the similar Blackfriars polyurethane to go on slightly better.

Our late lamented Editor, Paul Freshney was an airbrush expert and always used Ronseal Polyurethane over Humbrol Enamel using airbrushes for his award winning models and wrote an article on it for one of my Special issues. You might find this very useful so if you confirm your email to me by personal message I will send you a copy.

I have found over the years that a lot of perceived incompatibility issues with paints can be frequently as a result of not allowing the earlier coats to completely cure. Not just dry. This may take quite some time with some paints, even up to a week. If the earlier paint has not fully cured the solvents will still be released, which can then affect any subsequent paint put on top of it. I have seen modellers blame paint quality and compatibility issues when in fact it was their own impatience that led to the problem.

If you use a matt colour as your base, then lay a satin laquer over the top as a final coat, the finish will be a satin finish.

Look at todays motor cars, they lay a colour coat on them, that gives them a 'matt' finish, the shiny finish is then achieved by spraying on two or three coats of gloss laquer, thats why you see cars with patchy bonnets, that look like someone who has laid in the sun for too long & started peeling.

It's the laquer that gives the shine.

Thank you all for your replies and advice, I'll now stop worrying about the underlying paint and crack on with the job. I have Ronseal matt and satin finish interior varnishes – not the quick-drying variety – so I'll give them both a try and see which I prefer.

Colin, thank you for your comment about matt varnish giving a slight sheen, I'll definitely give that a try before I commit to using the satin varnish. I'd very much like to see Paul's article on airbrushing, I'll PM you my email address.

Kev, your comment about lacquers on cars in very appropriate, I can see exactly this effect on my own car – it's time I did something about it!
